    Abstract: A releasable fastener system comprises a loop portion and a hook portion. The loop portion includes a support and a loop material disposed on one side thereof. The hook portion generally includes a support and a plurality of closely spaced upstanding hook elements extending from one side thereof, wherein the plurality of hook elements comprises a first portion fabricated from a shape memory material and at least one additional portion fabricated from a different shape memory material. An activation device is coupled to the plurality of hook elements, the activation device being operable to selectively provide an activation signal to the plurality of hook elements to change a shape orientation, a yield strength property, a flexural modulus property, or a combination thereof to reduce a shear force and/or a pull-off force of an engaged hook and loop portion. When the hook portion and loop portion are pressed together they interlock to form a releasable engagement.

    Abstract: Method of making a subcutaneous melt flow-channel in the surface of a fugitive foam pattern used in lost-foam casting process. After a refractory skin has been formed on the surface of a foam pattern, a strip of the skin is treated so as to cause the foam underlying the strip to recede from the strip and leave a groove in its stead. Suitable treatments include (1) heating the strip, or (2) applying a foam solvent thereto that soaks through the skin. In each case, the treatment is such as to cause the foam underlying the treated strip to soften and recede from the strip.

    Abstract: A family of die castable, creep-resistant magnesium alloys has been developed for high-temperature structural applications such as automotive engines and transmission cases. These alloys contain between 3% and 6% aluminum, 1.7% and 3.3% calcium, and up to 0.2% strontium. They have demonstrated 25% greater tensile and compressive creep resistance than AE42, a commercial aluminum, rare earth containing magnesium alloy, and corrosion resistance as good as AZ91D. These alloys are estimated to cost less than AZ91D and have good castability in metal molds as used in permanent mold casting and die casting.

    Abstract: Heterogeneous metal matrix composite (MMC), and preform for making same. The MMC has two distinct interpenetrating metal-containing regions one of which is rich in reinforcement particles, and the other of which is devoid of reinforcement particles. The particle-free region pervades the composite in the form of a three-dimensional, open-cell reticulum of randomly oriented ligaments interconnecting a plurality of nodes and defining a plurality of interconnected interstitial cells of varying size. To make the MMC, a preform comprising an open cell foam substrate infiltrated with reinforcement particles is filled with the matrix metal. In one embodiment, the substrate is a fugitive polymer foam which is removed prior to filling the preform with metal. In another embodiment, the substrate is a metal foam which remains with the preform and the MMC after filling with metal.
