  • Patent number: 5255635
Abstract: An evaporative cooling system for an internal combustion engine has an equalizing tank which is sealed from the atmosphere and divided by a yielding wall into an air-equalizing chamber and a coolant chamber and which has a low flow-resistance connection to the suction side of a condensate pump.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 4, 1991
Date of Patent: October 26, 1993
    Assignee: Volkswagen AG
Inventors: Hans-Jurgen Schafer, Herbert Schapertons, Bodo Scheibner
  • Patent number: 5092282
Abstract: In the embodiment disclosed in the specification an evaporation cooling system for an internal combustion engine heat exchanger avoids valves or the like by providing a liquid-vapor separator in the vapor line between the engine and the main condenser and a bypass line for liquid coolant which bypasses the main condenser leading to a condensate line having a pump. When the temperature of the engine is high enough for coolant to vaporize, the vapor passes through the vapor line and the separator to the main condenser. A heat exchanger for a vehicle heater is disposed in the condensate line so that it always receives all of the coolant in circulation.

  • Patent number: 5090371
Abstract: The representative evaporative cooling system disclosed in the specification includes a cooling pump in a condensate line leading from a condenser to an internal combustion engine and a fan associated with the condenser, and has a turbine disposed in the coolant vapor line leading from the engine to the condenser which utilizes the energy of the coolant vapor to drive the coolant pump and the fan.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 23, 1991
Date of Patent: February 25, 1992
    Assignee: Volkswagen AG
    Inventors: Herbert Schapertons, Bodo Scheibner
  • Patent number: 4932365
Abstract: In the typical cooling system described in the specification, an internal combustion engine has coolant conduits connected to a coolant circuit for cooling the engine and to a heater circuit for heating the vehicle. The coolant circuit includes a valve to close the circuit during warming-up of the engine to permit fast warming-up of the vehicle and at high engine temperature conditions the coolant may be circulated through the heater circuit to provide additional heat removal from the coolant.
