  • Patent number: 5242101
Abstract: Catalytic converter carrier bodies have a jacket and adjacent layers of corrugated or smooth and corrugated metal foils wound or layered in the jacket. The metal foils contact each other and contact the jacket at connecting points, defining flow channels between the metal foils and between the metal foils and the jacket and defining brazing gaps at the connecting points. A method for brazing the carrier bodies includes initially dispersing powdered brazing material with a suitable particle size in a mixture of binder material and liquid. The flow channels are flooded with the liquid mixture for depositing the brazing material in at least some of the brazing gaps. Excess mixture is subsequently removed from the flow channels and the carrier body is then brazed.

  • Patent number: 4958428
Abstract: A process and an arrangement for producing a supporting body for a catalytic reactor is disclosed. In order to reduce thermal stress between the casing tube and the wound metal supporting body of an exhaust gas catalyst, the temperatures of which vary significantly during operation, it has been proposed to provide the ring-type composite of metal strips fastened in a casing tube with slots extending in longitudinal direction. This type of production results in high expenditures. The new process and arrangement of the invention provides that incisions are made directly into the metal strips before the winding or folding of the supporting body, so that a subsequent processing becomes superfluous. The thus produced supporting bodies have a plurality of incisions extending within the ring-type composite which can also prevent the buildup of thermal tensions or stress. The new supporting bodies are used for exhaust gas catalysts of motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 4891257
Abstract: A carrier matrix wound of a carrier strip having undulations in its transverse direction has deflections of the carrier strip, said deflections being arranged in planes. During the winding process, the deflections are created by the insertion of deflection pins between the corresponding winding layers. The deflections pins, in this case, are inserted between the winding layers as a function of the desired cross-section of the carrier matrix so that after the winding process and after the removal of the deflection pins, the carrier matrix can be inserted into a sheath that has the desired cross-section of the carrier matrix. By combining several winding bodies of this type into one carrier matrix, arbitrary cross-sections of carrier matrices can be produced, particularly cross-sections having concave archings. During the making process, the deflection pins are fitted through the corresponding bores of two winding disks that are connected with one another in a torsionally fixed way.

  • Patent number: 4576223
Abstract: The invention concerns a heat exchanger comprising a heat exchanger block having a plurality of tubes and fins arranged transversely to the tubes, at least one tube plate and a water tank, both made of a synthetic plastic material. The tube plate has orifices to receive the ends of the tubes and the water tank is fastened in a water tight manner to the tube plate. In order to obtain a simple and reliable joint of the heat exchanger tubes with the tube plate and the water tank with the tube plate, the plastic tube plate is provided on one side with projections. The orifices are located in these projections and the ends of the tubes are mounted in these orifices by expansion in the radial direction or impression in the axial direction. Both the tube plate and the water tank are equipped with flat surfaces at their edges. These surfaces rest on each other and the tube plate is joined with the water tank by vibration welding on these surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4531577
Abstract: A heat exchanger wherein a plurality of individual tubular parts are connected with each other is provided having a common pressure element for tube connections arranged in a plane. According to FIG. 1, a pressure platen 6 is present, which consists of a material harder than that of the external tubular part and is equipped with a number of orifices 7 corresponding to the number of tube connections. The pressure platen 6 surrounds the outer and inner tubular parts inserted in each other, and the diameter of the orifices 7 is smaller, at least in part, than the external diameter of the outer tubular part. According to the process for the manufacture of the heat exchanger, all of the tube connections are produced simultaneously by means of pressing on the pressure platen. Each of the tube connections is effected by reducing the cross section by means of plastic deformation of at least the outer, tubular part, whereby a press fit of the tubular part is obtained.
