As such, a pre-treatment coating composition can include an evaporable liquid vehicle and a pre-treatment coating matrix. The pre-treatment coating matrix can include from 5 wt % to 40 wt % multivalent metal salt, and from 5 wt % to 20 wt % coalescent latex binder comprising styrene-butadiene rubber, polyurethane, or mixture thereof. The composition can further include from 30 wt % to 80 wt % high Tg latex having a Tg greater than 80° C., from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt % water soluble binder, and from 3 wt % to 20 wt % wax having a melting point greater than 120° C.
