Patent number: 6049999Abstract: A papermaking machine including a forming section for forming a paper web, a press section for pressing water from the paper web, and a dryer for drying the paper web is disclosed. The dryer includes a wet end for drying the paper web to at least about 60 percent solids and a dry end for further drying the paper web. The dry end includes at least one series of alternating dryer cylinders and vacuum rolls. A dryer felt transports the paper web as the dryer felt travels about each dryer cylinder and each vacuum roll of the series. In one disclosed embodiment, at least one of the vacuum rolls receives a vacuum of at least about one inch water column (1.5 kilo-pascals, "kPa") to restrain the web as it dries. A method for manufacturing a paper web while restraining it by using the dryer apparatus described above is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1997Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Borgeir Skaugen, Gregory L. Patent number: 5891308Abstract: A press section is provided for a papermaking machine having an Extended Nip press before a conventional press section such as a Beloit Corporation Tri-Nip or Twinver press. A Beloit Corporation Extended Nip.RTM. press or similar type press, preferably of the closed blanket type, is installed before a conventional two or three nip press and thus reduces the problem of the web sticking to the center roll in the conventional press. The use of an Extended Nip press in front of a conventional pressing section can also increase the bulk of the web being formed. The pressing section of this invention is particularly useful for pressing webs formed of 100 percent tropical hardwood fibers which contain resinous particles which can cause problems in sticking to the center roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1996Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Borgeir Skaugen

Patent number: 5636448Abstract: A paper machine comprising a single tier drying section including at least two dryer groups is disclosed. In one group, the axes of rotation of at least two consecutive drying cylinders lie substantially in a plane, and the axes of rotation of the vacuum rolls are disposed below the plane of dryer cylinders. In the next group, the axes of rotation of at least two consecutive drying cylinders lie substantially in a further plane which is non-coplanar with the plane defined by the dryers of the first dryer group. The vacuum rolls of the second dryer group have their axes of rotation disposed above the further plane. The dryer transfer which transfers the web from one dryer group to the next one includes a joint run of the felts of the respective dryer sections and a vacuum roll at the downstream end of the joint run. The joint run receives the web between the felts when the web passes through the joint run.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1996Date of Patent: June 10, 1997Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Borgeir Skaugen, Gregory L. Patent number: 5175945Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for drying a web of paper emerging from a press section of a papermaking machine. The apparatus incudes a first dryer section means for initiating the drying of the first side of the web. A first transfer arrangement transfers the web from the press section to the first dryer section. A second dryer section is disposed downstream relative to the first dryer section for initiating the drying of a second side of the web, the second side of the web being opposite to the first side thereof. A first dryer transfer arrangement transfer the web without open draw between the first and second dryer sections. The first dryer transfer arrangement permits both threading of the web without the assistance of threading ropes and the drying of both sides of the web.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1989Date of Patent: January 5, 1993Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventors: Borgeir Skaugen, Gregory L. Patent number: 4854053Abstract: A transfer apparatus is disclosed for transferring a web from a press section to a dryer section. The apparatus includes a plurality of rotatable rolls which are disposed between the press section and the dryer section. A transfer felt is movably supported by the plurality of rolls for transporting the web from the press section towards the dryer section. The plurality of rolls includes a rotatable guide roll which is disposed adjacent to the press section for guiding the web from the press section towards the dryer section. A rotatable turning roll cooperates with the dryer section such that the transfer felt disposed between the guide roll and the turning roll defines a transfer section. The transfer section supports the web along the entire length of the transfer section from the guide roll to the turning roll.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1987Date of Patent: August 8, 1989Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventor: Borgeir Skaugen

Patent number: 4793899Abstract: A coating press apparatus is disclosed for coating a first and second side of a pressed web formed in a forming section of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a first press roll which defines a smooth imperforate first surface. The first surface cooperates with the first side of the web. A first backing roll cooperates with the first press roll for defining therebetween a first nip for the passage therethrough of the web. A first felt supports the web during passage through the first nip and a first short-dwell coater applies a coating directly to the surface of the first press roll upstream relative to the first nip such that a smooth and even first layer of the coating substance is applied to the first side of the web during passage of the web through the first nip.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventor: Borgeir Skaugen
