  • Patent number: 4121647
Abstract: A method of producing a multilayer ingot in an electron-beam installation, with the billet arranged in a base plate above the bottom thereof, and the base plate is reciprocated in a horizontal direction as said billet is being melted and the first layer of said ingot is being shaped. Another metal billet is melted above an intermediate vessel, with the molten metal being poured thereoff onto said first layer of the ingot in the base plate forming thereby a second layer on the first formed layer and additional layers of a multilayer ingot are shaped in a similar manner. The reciprocation speed of the base plate is inversely proportional to the cooling rate of the ingot metal in a longitudinal direction. The method of the invention ensures producing ingots with a smooth surface which does not require and preprocessing prior to rolling.

  • Patent number: 4061180
Abstract: An installation has a hollow cooled mould with a bottom plate having a cooled protrusion which partially enters the cavity of the cooled mould from underneath and forms the bottom of the mould at the beginning of melting. The protrusion is of a height exceeding that of the ingot forming walls of the cooled mould, and of a cross section allowing the cooled mould to be lowered to a level at which the ingot forming section of the cooled mould wall is below the upper end face of the cooled protrusion. The installation is compact in size and permits the use of a crane for upward removal of an ingot from the cooled mould.

  • Patent number: 4044223
Abstract: The proposed apparatus comprises an arc-welding source, including a current pulse generator with a control circuit and a rectifier.A choke at the output of the rectifier is connected to the electrode-article gap, in series with the rectifier of the pulse generator. The rectifier is a fullwave rectifier and comprises two controlled thyristors and two uncontrolled diodes. As the apparatus is in operation, one of the thyristors becomes conducting during each alternating current half-cycle. Current pulses pass through the arc and choke and are added to the pedestal of the current that continuously flows from the rectifier through the welding circuit.

  • Patent number: 4018973
Abstract: A plasma arc remelting furnace system with improved components including mechanisms for independently vertically feeding and oscillating the metal blank through the top of the furnace. Multiple plasma arc torches (plasmatrons) are installed in a sealed chamber and adjustable operators enable angular disposition of individual torches. The torches have improved torch nozzles with heat sink construction enabling operation at higher temperatures, better stabilized plasma arcs and longer torch life. The system can utilize ingot molds of various cross-section shapes, i.e., round, square, rectangular and polygonal and, depending upon mold shape, the number of torches can differ. Operating circuits are provided for use with a plurality of different numbers (up to eight) of torches, either with direct current or alternating current power sources, and possible variations of circuits will enable using a large number of torches.

  • Patent number: 3945818
Abstract: Molten slag is introduced through the lower portion of a crucible device into the bottom of the remelting zone in an electroslag remelting process using single or plural consumable electrodes in an amount sufficient to achieve a predetermined depth in the remelting zone. The achievement of the predetermined depth is signalled when current flows as a result of the slag level contacting and closing a circuit through an energized electrode disposed in the remelting zone. The crucible has a bottom plate at its lower end, the bottom plate has a recess in its top side and a piece of metal is inserted in the recess to provide electrical contact between the piece of metal and the bottom plate the piece of metal in the recess in the bottom plate is connected by a center tap line to an electric current source which passes through the electrode(s), the slag and the piece of metal during initial remelting.
