  • Patent number: 5127354
Abstract: An energy absorbing system utilizes a buckling design to absorb a large amount of energy for a given compressive force. This system includes a stack of elastic, thin-walled barrels which are generally aligned along a common longitudinal axis. Between each barrel, an annular plate is provided. Deformation limiters can be mounted on these plates to limit the amount of buckling for each barrel. The enerby absorbing system can be attached to a quay in order to fender a ship.
