  • Patent number: 4633756
Abstract: A bullet proof armor shield comprising a composite construction utilizing a ceramic-like armor plate and layers of a nylon-like cloth which provides a high degree of ballistic resistance and relatively light weight. The armor construction is characterized by an elongate armor component having an outer housing having a generally trapazoidal or parallelogram cross-section taken along a plane normal to its longest dimension. The armor components are adapted to be removably placed in pockets provided in an outer housing in closely adjacent relationship along the sloping edges of adjacent components to provide an overlap between them in edge to edge alignment. The individual armor components include a plurality of interior compartments adapted to receive a ceramic-like armor plate.

  • Patent number: 4525194
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the continuous production of glass articles characterized by the ability to form a single sheet of glass having two layers of different compositions, double glass panels having an air space between the panels or to produce tubes having either circular or eliptical cross-sections. The apparatus and method utilizes a molding body having a trough means which may be used to divide the glass mass into two cooperating flows over the working surfaces of an upper and lower molding body portions. The glass mass flows downwardly along an outer working surface of the upper body portion onto the inner working surfaces of the lower portion. A nozzle means provided with a ceramic shell or other refractory material may be disposed in an opening provided in the bottom portion of the molding body to provide a means for forming a closed double panel of sheet glass or a tube shaped article.

  • Patent number: 4473653
Abstract: A composition and method of making a high strength semi-crystalline ceramic material of the lithium, aluminum, silicon oxides system type. The composition is characterized by a relatively narrow range of lithium, aluminum, silicon and potassium oxides to form a base glass batch and is modified by including a novel proportional combination of the catalysts or modifiers comprising the components TiO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2 and SnO.sub.2 and including one or more additives taken from a group consisting of B.sub.2 O.sub.3, MgO, Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, CeO.sub.2, V.sub.2 O.sub.5 and Na.sub.2 O within specific percentage ranges. The composition is formed and subjected to heat treatment within certain time and temperature steps to provide for the desired degree, size and type of crystalline formation (lithium disilicate, cristobalite, spinel) which exhibits the desired physical, mechanical and chemical properties which include a superior resistance to high speed projectiles for armor applications.
