  • Publication number: 20030192879
Abstract: A magnetic pulse welding operation is performed to secure first and second metallic components together, such as a yoke and a driveshaft tube in a vehicular driveshaft assembly. The yoke includes a first portion, such as a body portion, and a second portion, such as a pair of opposed yoke arms. The end of the driveshaft tube is disposed co-axially about the body portion of the yoke. An inductor axially is positioned co-axially about the overlapping portions of the end of the driveshaft tube and the body portion of the yoke. The inductor is energized to perform a magnetic pulse welding operation to secure the end of the driveshaft tube to the body portion of the yoke without generating a significant flow of air toward the inductor.

  • Publication number: 20030192880

The yoke includes a first portion, such as a body portion, and a second portion, such as a pair of opposed yoke arms, that are separated by a bridge portion. The end of the driveshaft tube is disposed co-axially about the body portion of the yoke, and a magnetic pulse welding operation is performed to secure the end of the driveshaft tube to the body portion of the yoke. The bridge portion can be defined by a groove formed in either the outer surface or the inner surface of the yoke. The groove may have side portions that extend either generally perpendicular or are angled or tapered relative to an axis of rotation of the yoke. If desired, a pair of opposed, semi-circular grooves may be formed in the yoke to define the bridge portion.

  • Publication number: 20030173355
Abstract: A method for securing components of a vehicular driveshaft includes disposing a neck of an end fitting into the open end of a driveshaft tube. The end fitting is held with respect to the driveshaft tube so that an annular gap is formed between the neck and the driveshaft tube. An inductor is provided about the driveshaft tube adjacent the end receiving the neck. The inductor is energized to generate a magnetic field for collapsing the driveshaft tube about the neck at a high velocity so that the driveshaft tube and the end fitting are welded to each other.

The body includes an outer surface having a first portion that extends generally axially and a second portion that extends generally radially from the first portion. The outer surface includes a pocket formed in the second portion. The end fitting further includes a pair of arms extending from the body portion and having aligned apertures formed therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4150274
Abstract: A method is proposed for lap welding of tubes, comprising the steps of preheating the tubes by passing an electric current radially therebetween simultaneously along the entire circumference of the welded joint and subsequent compression of the welded surfaces of the tubes under the pressure of a pulsed magnetic field, the electric current being passed either as a pulse current or a train of such pulses and the tubes being arranged either with or without a gap therebetween. Also proposed are devices for effecting this method. The efficiency of the proposed method of welding and of the devices for effecting said method is 5-10 times more than that obtainable by the prior-art magnetic pulse welding procedures, both the method and devices being simple and economically efficient. Moreover, skelps of either similar or dissimilar metals can be welded by the proposed method.

  • Patent number: 4129846
Abstract: Disclosure is made of an inductor for magnetic pulse working of tubular metal articles, wherein the coil is composed of flat conductors insulated from one another and manufactured in the form of at least a sector portion of an annular disc helically bent at a pitch that ensures a displacement of a conductor's ends relative to one another by the length of the coil. Said flat conductors are assembled into a multiple helix. On one side, the ends of said flat conductors are arranged in one plane normal to the coil axis and circumferentially spaced relative to one another at equal angles.Due to the change in the inductance from a value equal to the inductance of a portion of a hollow tubular conductor to that of a single-turn inductor whose turn has geometrical dimensions equal to the dimensions of the inductor coil, the inductor of the present invention makes it possible to carry out magnetic pulse working of large-diameter metal articles.
