  • Publication number: 20240057729
Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) can be used to fabricate a wide palette of interlocking metasurfaces (ILMs). ILMs can be architecturally tailored to achieve intentional engagement and disengagement forces, and are amenable to topological optimization. ILMs can be fabricated using nearly any AM process at different length scales according to the capabilities of the process. As a result, ILMs represent a new class of joining technology enabled by additive manufacturing that is complementary to traditional joining processes including fasteners, welds, adhesives, etc.

  • Patent number: 11826952
Abstract: Multi-body interpenetrating lattices comprise two or more lattices that interlace or interpenetrate through the same volume without any direct physical connection to each other, wherein energy transfer is controlled by surface interactions. As a result, multifunctional or composite-like responses can be achieved by additive manufacturing of the interpenetrating lattices, even with only a single print material, with programmable interface-dominated properties. As a result, the interpenetrating lattices can have unique mechanical properties, including improved toughness, multi-stable/negative stiffness, and electromechanical coupling.

  • Publication number: 20230368036
Abstract: Multi-modal data autoencoding is provided. The method comprises receiving a multimodal dataset comprising number of different modalities of data related to a physical phenomenon common to the different modalities of data and encoding each of the different modalities of data into an individual latent representation. The individual latent representations are combined into a single Gaussian mixture distribution in a shared latent space. A number of parallel decoders and physics simulators decode the Gaussian mixture, wherein the decoders and physics simulators respectively reconstruct the multimodal dataset. When a unimodal dataset comprising a single modality of data related to the physical phenomenon is received a value of the physical phenomenon is predicted according to cross-modal inference learning from encoding and decoding of the multimodal dataset.

  • Patent number: 10473175
Abstract: Extension springs that can be manufactured to a small size with a precise free length are described herein. An extension spring comprises a first drawbar member and a second drawbar member that extend along a same direction. The extension spring further comprises a compression spring coil that surrounds respective portions of the draw bar members. At either end of the spring coil are positioned end caps that surround the drawbar members. The end caps provide flat surfaces on which the ends of the spring coil rest in a resting position of the extension spring. The end caps are held against bent ends of arms of the drawbar members by tension of the spring coil. When the drawbar members are drawn apart from one another, the end caps compress the spring coil. Compression of the spring coil causes forces that resist the motion of the drawbar members apart from one another.
