  • Publication number: 20230143632
Abstract: A method for determining a transportation mode acquires magnetometer and speed data from a mobile device, correlates the magnetometer to the speed data in groupings, and performs spectral analysis on the groups of magnetometer data. Energy calculated for each of a set of frequency components obtained from the spectral analysis is compared to a baseline value to generate a difference, and a transportation mode type is assigned to the vehicle based on the difference.

  • Publication number: 20220324381
Abstract: A method for determining usage of a mobile device in a vehicle by a user includes receiving a first value indicating an “off” state of a screen of the mobile device at a first time, obtaining first movement measurements, and computing a gravity diff angle (GDA) value for the first movements. The method also includes determining that the GDA value exceeds a predefined GDA threshold value, computing summary statistics for the first movements, and classifying the summary statistics as corresponding to mobile device usage starting. The method further includes classifying the first movements of the mobile device as usage movements in response to determining that the GDA value exceeds the predefined GDA threshold, classifying the summary statistics as corresponding to mobile device usage starting, or both, and generating an indication of mobile device usage in response to classifying the first movements of the mobile device as usage movements.

  • Patent number: 11363411
Abstract: According to some embodiments of the invention, movement measurements may be obtained from a movement sensor (e.g., an accelerometer) of a mobile device in a vehicle. In addition, location measurements may be obtained from a location sensor (e.g., a GPS) of the mobile device in the vehicle. The movement measurements and the location measurements may be cross-referenced to each other to remove erroneous measurements, such as physically impossible measurements. The remaining measurements may be used to draw conclusions about the movements or locations, such as to identify a movement event (e.g., a braking event, an acceleration event, or the like).
