    Abstract: A system and method of sensing multiple parameters. The method may include implanting an implantable sensor in a patient and reading an output from at least one of the implantable sensing elements. The implantable sensor may have a housing within which are disposed a plurality of implantable sensing elements. At least one of the implantable sensing elements may respond to lactate. In addition, a medical professional may administer to the patient for myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction angina, sepsis based on the output read. A medical professional may also administer to the patient having an implantable cardiovascular defibrillator or who is receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The method may be used in a surgical or intensive care environment.

    Abstract: A delivery device includes first and second housing portions that selectively engage and disengage. A reservoir on one housing portion operatively engages a drive device and/or a needle inserting device on the other housing portion. Upon proper engagement of the housing portions, the reservoir operatively couples to the drive device and/or the needle inserting device. A first magnet on the first housing portion and a second magnet (or a magnetically-attractive material) on the second housing portion are positioned to magnetically interact with each other, upon operative engagement of the housing portions. A third magnet on the second housing portion may be opposed to the first magnet to help align the housing portions for connection. A magnet-responsive device may be on one or both housing portions to detect alignment and/or connection of the housing portions.

    Abstract: An automobile monitoring system is for monitoring patient body characteristics. The automobile monitoring system includes at least one sensor to monitor at least one patient body characteristic, at least one transmitter operatively coupled to the at least one sensor to communicate sensor data, at least one monitor operatively coupled to the at least one transmitter to receive the sensor data, and automobile electronics operatively coupled to the at least one transmitter to receive sensor data. The at least one monitor and the automobile electronics display the sensor data to the patient. The at least one transmitter communicates with the at least one monitor and the automobile electronics using at least one wireless protocol including Bluetooth, infrared, radio frequency, 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g. The automobile electronics include at least one of a GPS navigation system, a DVD entertainment system, an on-system computer, or a stereo system.

    Abstract: A reusable analyte sensor site for use with a replaceable analyte sensor for determining a level of an analyte includes a site housing and a resealable insertion site coupled to one end of the site housing. Preferably, the site housing is formed to have an interior cavity, and includes an outer membrane made of a material selected to promote vascularization and having a first pore size, and an inner membrane made of a material selected to be free of tissue ingress. Also, the site housing permits the analyte to pass through the site housing to the interior cavity to permit measurement by the replaceable analyte sensor. The resealable insertion site is provided for inserting the replaceable analyte sensor into the interior cavity of the site housing.

The cannula has at least one port structure formed near another end of the lumen opposite the distal end. The sensor portion includes a sensor coupled to and extending from the base having at least one sensor electrode formed on a substrate. The sensor is for determining a body characteristic of the patient at the placement site. The at least one piercing member is coupled to and extends from the base to facilitate insertion of the cannula and the sensor.

    Abstract: The invention provides methods and apparatus for detecting an analyte in blood. The apparatus is particularly suited for bringing a sensor into direct contact with blood in vivo. The apparatus comprises a sensor that detects the presence of an analyte and an assembly means. The assembly means has a sensor end, wherein the sensor end of the assembly means is affixed to the sensor, and the assembly means is adapted for coupling with a venous flow device. By coupling with a venous flow device, the assembly means brings the sensor into direct contact with blood flowing through the venous flow device. Examples of venous flow devices that bring the sensor into direct contact with the blood of a subject include, but are not limited to, intravenous catheters and external blood loops, such as are used in extra corporeal membrane oxygenation or hemodialysis.

    Abstract: A multiple layer tubing for conveying a fluidic media in a medical or laboratory environment includes at least one outer layer of a copolyester ether (COPE) material. The tubing also includes an inner layer of a material compatible with sensitive fluidic media and at least one intermediate layer for bonding the outer layer to the inner layer. The material of the inner layer may be a high density polyethylene or a polyurethane material. The material of the intermediate layer may be ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). With the use of a COPE outer layer, a multiple layer medical tubing may be made without polyvinylchloride (PVC) or PVC plasticizers. The multiple layer tubing may be made by extrusion. The three layers may be co-extruded, simultaneously, as part of an efficient manufacturing processes.
