Patent number: 8747880Abstract: An engineered three-dimensional structure includes living cells cohered with each other. The living cells suitably include Schwann cells and at least one other type of cell. The cells accompanying the Schwann cells can suitably be bone marrow stem cells or another type of cell having one or more anti-inflammatory properties. The structure is suitably a graft that facilitates restorative axon growth when the graft is implanted between the proximal and distal stubs of a severed nerve in a living organism. The graft can optionally include a plurality of acellular conduits extending between opposite axial ends of the graft. Bio-printing techniques can be used to assemble a three-dimensional construct that becomes through maturation an axon-guiding graft, by stacking a plurality of multicellular bodies, each of which includes a plurality of living cells cohered to one another to sufficiently to avoid collapsing when the multicellular bodies are stacked to form the structure.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2011Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: The Curators of the University of MissouriInventors: Gabor Forgacs, Stephen H. Colbert, Bradley A. Hubbard, Francoise Marga, Dustin Christiansen

Publication number: 20100017020Abstract: A sorting system and method with a conveyance for transporting items to be sorted at a predetermined speed. An XRF spectrometer subsystem includes at least one x-ray source directing x-ray energy at an item carried by the conveyance and a detector responsive to x-rays emitted by the item and producing a spectral signal characterizing a leading edge of the item and a trailing edge of the item. A diverter subsystem downstream of the XRF subsystem is for diverting sorted items. An electronic processing subsystem is responsive to the detector signal and is configured to determine if the item is to be diverted based on the elemental makeup of the item from its x-ray spectrum. The same processing subsystem is also configured to calculate the position of the item on the conveyance based on the detector signal and together with the predetermined speed of the conveyance controlling the diverter subsystem to divert selected items.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 16, 2008Publication date: January 21, 2010Inventors: Bradley Hubbard-Nelson, Don Sackett, John Francis Egan

Patent number: 7535989Abstract: An XRF system including an analyzer with a sample bottle holder, an x-ray source positioned to emit x-rays into a sample bottle placed in the holder, and a detector positioned to receive x-rays emitted by a sample in the sample bottle positioned in the sample bottle holder. A supply of sample bottles receivable in the sample bottle holder, each sample bottle including a first cap with the window therein for allowing x-rays to pass there through when the sample bottle is positioned in the holder, and a second cap without a window for transporting and storing the sample.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2006Date of Patent: May 19, 2009Assignee: Innov-X Systems, Inc.Inventors: Ronald H. Russell, Peter John Hardman, Bradley Hubbard-Nelson

Patent number: 7440541Abstract: A dual source tube XRF system and method wherein a first x-ray source is employed to direct x-rays in a first energy band at a sample and at least a second x-ray source is employed to direct x-rays in a second energy band at the sample. A detector is responsive to x-rays emitted by the sample after irradiation by the first and second x-ray sources. An analyzer is responsive to the detector and is configured to determine the amount of at least a first substance in the sample based on irradiation of the sample by the first x-ray source and to determine the amount of at least a second substance in the sample based on irradiation of the sample by the second x-ray source. A controller is responsive to the analyzer and is configured to energize the first and second x-ray sources either simultaneously or sequentially.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2006Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Assignee: Innov-X-Systems, Inc.Inventors: Bradley Hubbard-Nelson, Peter John Hardman

Patent number: 7286633Abstract: A fuel analysis system and method wherein an x-ray source emits x-rays at an energy level below but proximate the absorption edge of sulfur. A monochromator is in the optical path between the source and a fuel sample for directing x-rays at a single energy level at the fuel sample to limit excitation of any sulfur in the fuel sample. A detector is responsive to x-rays emitted by the sample and an analyzer is responsive to the detector and configured to determine the amount of silicon and aluminum in the sample.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2006Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Innov-X Systems, Inc.Inventors: Peter John Hardman, Bradley Hubbard-Nelson

Publication number: 20060139030Abstract: In accordance with the teachings described herein, systems and methods are provided for diagnosing manufacturing defects in a digital hearing instrument. A system may include a hearing instrument component that is electrically connected to a hearing instrument integrated circuit. A diagnostic program may be stored in a memory location on the hearing instrument integrated circuit, the diagnostic program when executed by the hearing instrument integrated circuit being operable to test an operation of the hearing instrument component and indicate a failed operation of the hearing instrument component using a test indicator.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2005Publication date: June 29, 2006Inventors: Bradley Hubbard, Stephen Armstrong

Patent number: 5870051Abstract: A signal processing system which accepts input from an x-ray detector-preamplifier and produces a signal of reduced dynamic range for subsequent analog-to-digital conversion. The system conditions the input signal to reduce the number of bits required in the analog-to-digital converter by removing that part of the input signal which varies only slowly in time and retaining the amplitude of the pulses which carry information about the x-rays absorbed by the detector. The parameters controlling the signal conditioner's operation can be readily supplied in digital form, allowing it to be integrated into a feedback loop as part of a larger digital x-ray spectroscopy system.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: William K. WarburtonInventors: William K. Warburton, Bradley Hubbard

Patent number: 5684850Abstract: A high speed, digitally based, signal processing system which accepts input data from a detector-preamplifier and produces a spectral analysis of the x-rays illuminating the detector. The system achieves high throughputs at low cost by dividing the required digital processing steps between a "hardwired" processor implemented in combinatorial digital logic, which detects the presence of the x-ray signals in the digitized data stream and extracts filtered estimates of their amplitudes, and a programmable digital signal processing computer, which refines the filtered amplitude estimates and bins them to produce the desired spectral analysis. One set of algorithms allow this hybrid system to match the resolution of analog systems while operating at much higher data rates. A second set of algorithms implemented in the processor allow the system to be self calibrating as well. The same processor also handles the interface to an external control computer.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1996Date of Patent: November 4, 1997Assignee: William K. WarburtonInventors: William K.
