Publication number: 20180080598Abstract: A counterbalanced display stand can be used with a tablet or other suitable portable electronic device. The display stand can allow for tilt, rotation, and lateral movement in multiple directions to arrive at a desired display position. A 4-bar linkage arrangement can allow for such movements, which can be manual from a user and/or motorized through other device components. The display stand can be counterbalanced such that minimal friction is required to hold the device at a desired display position. A magnetic connector can detachably connect the device to the display stand. A feedback component can facilitate an automated repositioning of the display stand in response to changing conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2017Publication date: March 22, 2018Inventors: Christiaan A. LIGTENBERG, Bradley J. HAMEL, Brett W. DEGNER, Scott J. KRAHN, Kristopher P. LAURENT, Robert J. LOCKWOOD

Publication number: 20180058120Abstract: An electronic device with an enclosure having a base and a base is disclosed. The electronic device can include a shaft coupled with the base and the base. The shaft can be coupled with a torque component engagement feature that provides a frictional engagement with the shaft. The torque component engagement feature can magnetically couple with a magnet, or magnets. The electronic device can also include a magnetic assembly configured to magnetically couple with the shaft engagement. The magnetic assembly can provide a first magnetic field that magnetically couples the torque component engagement feature with the magnetic assembly. However, the magnetic assembly can change to a second, reduced magnetic field less than the first magnetic field. When the display assembly is rotated toward the base, the magnetic assembly changes to the second magnetic field, and the torque component engagement feature magnetically decouples from the magnetic assembly based on the reduced magnetic field.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2016Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventor: Bradley J. Patent number: 9608506Abstract: Embodiments described herein may take the form of an electromagnetic actuator that produces a haptic output during operation. Generally, an electromagnetic coil is wrapped around a central magnet array. A shaft passes through the central magnet array, such that the central array may move along the shaft when the proper force is applied. When a current passes through the electromagnetic coil, the coil generates a magnetic field. The coil is stationary with respect to a housing of the actuator, while the central magnet array may move along the shaft within the housing. Thus, excitation of the coil exerts a force on the central magnet array, which moves in response to that force. The direction of the current through the coil determines the direction of the magnetic field and thus the motion of the central magnet array.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2016Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Brett W. Patent number: 9541959Abstract: An electronic device is disclosed that redirects light escaping from a display assembly light source to an illuminable region of the electronic device. In some embodiments, the electronic device includes a light guide panel arranged along a rear surface of the display assembly and configured to receive light escaping from a lateral side of the light source. The light guide panel can then be arranged to transport that light to a position behind the illuminable region and emit it back out in a focused beam having a size about the same as the illuminable region. In some embodiments the illuminable region can be a logo or device identifier.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2014Date of Patent: January 10, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Steven J.
