  • Patent number: 6106044
Abstract: In a vehicle having a foldable passenger seat, there is a storage area underneath the seat or bench. According to the invention, a rigid, substantially u-shaped structural member closes up an opening under the seat to thereby inhibit access to the volume of storage space and form a lockable storage enclosure. The structural member cooperates with existing underseat components to form the novel underseat enclosure. Notches are formed in the upper edge portions of the member to accommodate existing underseat handles.

  • Patent number: 6082804
Abstract: The side panels of a storage enclosure are intersected by slots or slip channels that mate with support rails attached to the load bed sidewalls of a pickup truck. The storage enclosure is installed by sliding it forward, with the storage enclosure riding on the support rails to an operative position wherein the access opening of the storage enclosure is presented flush with the tailgate access opening and the storage compartment is conveniently accessible when the tailgate is open and is secured against unauthorized access when the tailgate is closed. Vertical movement of the storage enclosure relative to the load bed is blocked by engagement of slip channel shoulders against the slip rails. Forward movement of the storage enclosure is blocked by the rear wheel well fenders of the pickup truck. Rearward movement of the storage enclosure is blocked by the tailgate when it is in the closed position.

  • Patent number: 6065794
Abstract: In a vehicle having a load deck, deck sidewalls including respective wheel wells, and a tailgate, a security enclosure for installation on the load deck thereof comprises a first panel mounted between the deck sidewalls and sloping upwardly toward the tailgate from a first end adjacent the load deck to a distal second end. A second panel coupled to the second end of the first panel and extending therefrom toward the tailgate defines an enclosed space with the first panel, the tailgate, the load deck, and the deck sidewalls. A releasable lock mechanism is attached to the second panel and includes a bolt extendable through a bore formed through the first panel to secure the second panel to the first panel. In addition, the second panel includes opposing sloped edges for engaging the wheel wells to support the second panel in a generally horizontal position.

  • Patent number: 5957521
Abstract: In a vehicle having a foldable passenger seat, there is a storage area underneath the seat. According to the invention, a lockable plate closes up an opening under the seat to thereby inhibit access to the volume of storage space and form a lockable storage enclosure. The plate cooperates with existing underseat components to form the novel underseat enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5598962
Abstract: A removable security trunk for a motor vehicle such as a station wagon, van or sport-utility type vehicle having a relatively large rear access opening with a width less than the width between the sidewalls or trim panels of a rear cargo compartment in the vehicle. The security trunk includes opposed longitudinally extending support members which may be secured to the compartment sidewalls for supporting a generally horizontally extending top panel for sliding movement into and out of the vehicle rear access opening at the reduced width portion. One or more vertically extending fore and aft partitions extend between the top panel and the compartment support deck for providing multiple storage compartments and for supporting the top panel. The partitions may be disconnected from the top panel whereby three generally planar members may be easily stored in or out of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5564776
Abstract: A storage enclosure for a motor vehicle having a loadbed defined by opposed sidewalls, a load deck and a rear closure, such as a tailgate, includes a generally horizontal top wall extending between the loadbed sidewalls and a depending front wall having a hinged wall portion which may be positioned extending generally horizontally above the deck to form an enclosure space forward of the tailgate when in its closed position. The hinged wall portion may be positioned to extend vertically downwardly from the front wall at its hinge connection to increase the size of the enclosure space defined between the top wall and the load deck, the opposed sidewalls and the tailgate in its closed position. The hinged wall portion may be locked in either working position. The enclosure top wall may be secured to the opposed loadbed sidewalls at stake recesses and the front wall may have opposed recesses to accommodate the loadbed sidewall beam portions.

  • Patent number: 5498049
Abstract: A security enclosure or trunk for luggage, tools and other property, particularly adapted for use with utility vehicles such as light duty trucks having hinged tailgates. The enclosure is adapted to be hinged to the vehicle tailgate and disposed in the vehicle loadbox when the tailgate is in a closed position. The enclosure may be moved with the tailgate to its open position to provide maximum cargo storage space in the loadbox. Access to the enclosure is obtained by opening the tailgate while leaving the enclosure in or moving it to its upright position supported on the vehicle cargo deck.

  • Patent number: 5324089
Abstract: A security enclosure is mounted on the open load deck of a jeep between the rear seat and the tailgate. The load deck, deck sidewalls, and tailgate provide four sidewalls of the security compartment. Top and forward enclosure panels of the security enclosure are movably coupled together for pivotal movement by a hinge. The forward enclosure panel is stabilized by side flanges which are rigidly attached in flush engagement to the load deck side panels. The top enclosure panel is releasably locked to the load deck side panels by spring loaded lock pins which are concealed within the security compartment. According to this arrangement, access to the security compartment and to the lock assembly is controlled by normal operation of the tailgate and its lock. Upon release of the lock pins, the top enclosure panel may be rotated out of the way to provide a top opening access to the load deck for accommodating oversized articles.

  • Patent number: 4938519
Abstract: A security enclosure is mounted onto the open load deck of a jeep between the rear seat and the tailgate. The load deck, deck sidewalls and tailgate provide four sidewalls of the security compartment. The top and forward sidewalls of the security enclosure are provided by top and forward panels which are stabilized by side flanges which are adapted for flush engagement against the load deck side panels. The top panel has a notch formed along the rear edge thereof for receiving the latch housing of the tailgate door which permits closure and locking of the tailgate. According to this arrangement, access to the security compartment is controlled by normal operation of the tailgate and its lock.
