  • Patent number: 6623217
Abstract: An indexable turning insert has main upper and lower surfaces of polygonal shape joined by side surfaces. Insert corners are defined by the intersection of insert sides at each corner of the polygonal surfaces, insert corners having a curve of relatively small radius defining the nose of the corner. The inserts are at least partially symmetrical and have a plurality of identical cutting edges. Adjacent the corner nose of an identical cutting edge are wiping surfaces comprising at least one curved segment joining the insert corner radius and defined by a radius larger than the corner radius and at least one flat segment intersecting the insert side at a shallow angle.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: September 23, 2003
    Assignee: Valenite, Inc.

  • Patent number: 5333972
Abstract: An indexable, on edge, reversible cutting insert for use with a boring toolhead, comprising a body having parallelogram shaped top and bottom seating faces equipped with an off center aperture there through, and at least one cutting face. The cutting face is equipped with a bidirectional chip breaker groove on each side of the cutting face to define an island, each side groove having a slotting, progressively deepening recess extending along the edge of said cutting face, said groove presenting an increasing incident angled and having a positive rake and an axial rake around the edge of the cutting face, which together form an obtuse angle, said groove forming at least two cutting corners diagonally apposed to each other. Each cutting corner is comprised of a scalloped radius formed in the island which intersects a chip directional flat formed in the groove, at an obtuse angle to form a bidirectional pocket area.

  • Patent number: 5249894
Abstract: An ultra light duty polygonal lay down indexable insert having a scalloped shaped island symmetrically disposed on the top or bottom surface of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5230591
Abstract: A polygonal lay down indexable cutting insert for a centrally located island and light feed and light depth of cut applications. The insert has a variable land surface angle which is 14.degree. at each corner of the insert and merges into a 12.degree. as measured along the flanks of the insert. A second descending angle is 27.degree. along the flanks. The corners are radiused along the variable land surface and the descending angle surfaces to impart better strength and cutting for the insert. Moreover, the first variable descending angle is greater than the first variable descending angle along the flanks of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5192171
Abstract: Chip control insert having parallel side central aperture diamond configuration, a planar recess below peripheral cutting edges on each side, and characterized by a planar locating surface surrounding the central aperture with a substantial area recess intermediate the aperture and locating surface, said locating surface having corner and intermediate radial projections with inclined side walls to provide effective chip breaking.

  • Patent number: 4963061
Abstract: In a ceramic indexable cutting insert, an edge strengthening land extends rearwardly of a beveled cutting edge at an angle of from about 80 to about 100 degrees with respect to the peripheral side surface, and a grooved recess extents rearwardly and along the edge strengthening land to direct chips upwardly and outwardly away from the insert and the cutting edge. In one embodiment of the present invention intended for conditions of heavy depth of cut, enhanced edge strength is sacrificed and an edge strengthened land is not provided.
