Patent number: 12043466Abstract: A structure is described for forming a wrapper, e.g., for print media, where the structure includes lines of weakness for facilitating a user's tearing of the wrapper to access the contents. The lines of weakness may include a first line of weakness that extends along a fold line of an envelope fold forming one of the front or rear or right sides of the wrapped package, as well as a second line of weakness that extends substantially perpendicularly to the respective longitudinal fold lines and a third line of weakness that extends between the first line of weakness and the second line of weakness and is disposed at a non-zero angle with respect to each. In this way, a tear initiated near the first line of weakness and may be propagated along the other lines of weakness to create an opening for accessing the product.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2023Date of Patent: July 23, 2024Assignee: SONOCO DEVELOPMENT, INC.Inventors: Scott William Huffer, Brent Bosman

Patent number: 9199781Abstract: A flexible packaging laminate for a microwavable package has a built-in vent for steam. The vent is formed by an outer score line through the outer layer(s) of the laminate to define an outer flap, and a smaller-footprint inner score line formed through the inner layer(s) of the laminate, so that there is a marginal region of U- or V-shape bounded between the two score lines. A patch of pressure-sensitive adhesive is disposed between the outer and inner structures of the laminate such that PSA is present in the marginal region. Pressure exerted on the inner flap or plug created by the inner score line overcomes the PSA between the outer flap and the inner structure in the marginal region, causing the outer flap to be pushed out along with the inner flap or plug, thereby venting steam through the resulting opening.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2013Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: Brent Bosman

Patent number: 8297841Abstract: A flexible package is defined by an inner package layer and a surrounding outer package layer. The inner and outer layers define a tubular body and opposing end portions. A first region of weakness is provided within the outer package layer and is spaced from one end of the package. The region of weakness within the outer packaging layer forms an opening mechanism for the outer layer to expose the inner packaging layer. A second region of weakness is provided within the inner package layer and is spaced from the end of the inner package. The second region of weakness positioned offset from the first region of weakness, to permit the two opening mechanism to be separately activated.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2010Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventors: Brent Bosman, Scott Huffer

Publication number: 20110150371Abstract: A flexible pouch is formed from a laminate having built-in opening features. The laminate is wrapped/folded into a generally tubular configuration and sealed at top and bottom ends and along a longitudinal fin. A tear initiation feature is provided in the form of a hole extending through the laminate and located within a top seal of the pouch. The tear initiation feature is located at one longitudinal edge of the pouch when the laminate is wrapped and sealed to form the pouch. A fin tear-propagating feature is also provided in the form of two tear areas formed respectively in the side edges of the laminate such that the tear areas substantially coincide on the fin so as to form the fin tear-propagating feature, the fin tear-propagating feature being substantially in transverse alignment with the tear initiation feature. In another embodiment, the tear initiation feature is provided as a score line extending across the pouch.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2011Publication date: June 23, 2011Inventors: Brent Bosman, John Prizzi

Publication number: 20110103718Abstract: A package is provided having at least one panel formed from a laminate having an inner sealing layer, an outer web layer and an adhesive layer provided between the inner and outer layers. The outer web layer includes a removable tab portion defined by a first line of weakness in the layer. The inner sealing layer contains at least one removable plug portion defined by a second line of weakness. The first line of weakness is in registration with and surrounds the second line of weakness. The adhesive layer includes a permanent adhesive provided directly between at the tab and the plug portion and a non-permanent adhesive within the remainder of the area defined by the first line of weakness. Removal of the tab from the outer web causes separation of the plug from the inner layer, opening a vent within the package.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2009Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: Brent Bosman
