Publication number: 20220350633Abstract: An improved architecture is provided which enables significant convergence of the components of a system to implement virtualization. The infrastructure is VM-aware, and permits scaled out converged storage provisioning to allow storage on a per-VM basis, while identifying I/O coming from each VM. The current approach can scale out from a few nodes to a large number of nodes. In addition, the inventive approach has ground-up integration with all types of storage, including solid-state drives. The architecture of the invention provides high availability against any type of failure, including disk or node failures. In addition, the invention provides high performance by making I/O access local, leveraging solid-state drives and employing a series of patent-pending performance optimizations.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 25, 2022Publication date: November 3, 2022Applicant: Nutanix, Inc.Inventors: Mohit ARON, Dheeraj PANDEY, Ajeet SINGH, Rishi BHARDWAJ, Brent CHUN

Publication number: 20170322827Abstract: In some embodiments, a system for testing performance of a virtualization environment comprises host machines, wherein each of the host machines comprises a hypervisor, one or more user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller, and one or more virtual disks comprising a plurality of storage devices. The one or more virtual disks may be accessible by the virtual machine controllers, and the virtual machine controllers conduct I/O transactions with the one or more virtual disks. The system may receive a specification of a hardware configuration for a host machine and configure the virtualization environment to incorporate the host machine. The system may then select one or more qualification tasks for a test scenario, execute the qualification tasks in the test scenario, and monitor performance of the virtualization environment. The system may then calculate a score assessing how well the hardware configuration may perform in the virtualization environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2017Publication date: November 9, 2017Inventors: Gary Jeffrey Little, Christopher Ryan Wilson, George Alfred Dowding, Hement Belbase, Brent Chun

Patent number: 9354912Abstract: Disclosed is an approach for overseeing the overall state of a virtual storage system, and for taking actions as necessary to manage the health and efficient performance of that system. A curator entity is provided on a distributed basis to manage and perform these functions. A master curator manages this workload that is performed by multiple slave curators. MapReduce operations are performed to implement the curator workload. Periodically, the master curator coordinates a full scan of all the metadata in the system using three MapReduce operations. Partial scans may also be run using a single MapReduce operation.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2013Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: Nutanix, Inc.Inventors: Mohit Aron, Brent Chun, Chaitanya Venkata Krishna Bayapuneni

Publication number: 20110082832Abstract: A system and methods for parallelized backup and restore process and system are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes providing a massively parallelized analytic database, serializing a schedule of a transaction history of the massively parallelized analytic database, and creating a transactionally consistent copy of the massively parallelized analytic database. The method may include restoring one or more of an original system and a configurationally equivalent system to a transaction consistent state as of a time the transactionally consistent copy was created. The transactionally consistent copy may be stored on a separate system than the original system. Accessibility to the transactionally consistent copy may be retained on the separate system even when the original system is inaccessible by the storing of the transactionally consistent copy on the separate system.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 5, 2009Publication date: April 7, 2011Inventors: RAMKUMAR VADALI, Brent Chun
