  • Patent number: 6534611
Abstract: A functional polymer having active and stable functional groups useful for separation or reactive processes in chemical manufacture or analysis is disclosed. The polymer comprises repeat units having structures corresponding to cycloaddition products of polymeric 1-(vinylphenyl)ethylene with electron-poor alkenes. A process for preparing the functional polymer does not require radical reactions or the exclusion of oxygen. The properties of the polymeric matrix produced can be adjusted by modifying the polymer. For example, the polymer particle size and shape, porosity, swellability, surface area, and number, type and distribution of functional groups may be controlled.

  • Patent number: 6465580
Abstract: A functional polymer having active and stable functional groups, for separation or reactive processes in chemical manufacture or analysis, has carbon-linked functional groups on dimethylene spacers; a method of preparation is from pre-existing polymers comprising polymeric 1-(vinylphenyl)ethylene repeat units, by treating with H—X in the presence of free radicals, wherein X comprises a carbon atom that is linked to the —CH[Ph-CH2CH2—]—CH2— remainder of said —CH[Ph-CH2CH2—X]—CH2— repeat unit in said product as a consequence of said reaction; the carbon atom can have characteristics selected from being sp2-hybridized and doubly bonded to an oxygen, being sp3-hybridized and singly bonded to an oxygen, being sp3-hybridized and singly bonded to a nitrogen that is also singly bonded to an sp2-hybridized carbon, being sp3-hybridized and singly bonded to a nitrogen and also to an sp2-hybridized carbon, and being sp3-hybridized and singly bonded

  • Patent number: 6448344
Abstract: A functional polymer having active and stable functional groups, for separation or reactive processes in chemical manufacture or analysis, bears nonmetal oxyacid derivatives on dimethylene spacers; a method of preparation is from pre-existing polymers comprising polymeric 1-(vinylphenyl)ethylene repeat units, including radial copolymers of divinylbenzene, by treating with HX(O)mR1nR2 in presence of free radicals; another method of preparation is by treating a polymer comprising repeat units of the form —CH[Ph—CH2CH2—X(O)mR1nR2]—CH2— where X is of lower oxidation state, with oxidizing agent so as to oxidize X to a higher oxidation state; another method of preparation is to exchange one or both of R1 and R2 substituents in —CH[Ph—CH2CH2—X(O)mR1nR2]—CH2— with other substituents; other functional groups may be present; the functional polymer comprises repeat units of the form —CH[Ph—CH2CH2—X(O)mR1nR2]&mdash
