Abstract: Method and system for reporting out-of-credit condition for a network device connected to a network. An indication to an out-of credit logic is provided that a first sub-port operating using a first protocol is out of credit to transmit information from a transmit segment. The first sub-port is a part of a base-port that includes a plurality of sub-ports that can be configured to operate at more than one operating speed to process packets complying with different protocols. The out-of-credit logic determines when the first sub-port is out-of-credit for a threshold period of time, and reports that the sub-port is out-of-credit to a processor of the network device.

Abstract: Method for reporting bandwidth loss on a network link that couples a switch element to a network is provided. The method includes determining if credit is unavailable to transmit a packet and a packet is available at a switch port for transmission; determining bandwidth loss due to lack of credit; and reporting the bandwidth loss to a processor of the network switch. The switch element includes a processor for executing firmware code; a port for receiving and transmitting network packets; and a bandwidth loss logic that determines bandwidth loss if credit is unavailable to transmit a packet and the packet is available at the port; and reports the bandwidth loss to the processor.

Abstract: Method and system for configuring a switch element having a plurality of ports to operate as a test tool is provided. The method includes initiating a user interface with a plurality of selectable options, where a user selects one or more of the selectable options for configuring test parameters for a port to operate as a test port; obtaining a license key for configuring the port to operate as the test port; selecting a port from among the plurality of ports to operate as the test port; selecting a frame type for transmitting frames from the test port; specifying characteristics for the frames transmitted by the test port; determining whether the test port is online or offline; enabling a transmitter of the test port; starting a link state machine of the test port; the test port receiving an active signal or an active primitive to thereby activate the test port; the test port logging into the network; and the test port logging into a target device of the network.
