Patent number: 6616547Abstract: A golf club head is disclosed that comprises a body having a striking face and a sole, wherein a recess is formed in the sole. An insert is located within the sole recess, the insert including a core and an intermediate layer that at least partially separates the core from the recess wall. The intermediate layer has a hardness and a modulus of elasticity that are less than that of the core, such that when the golf club head is used to strike a golf ball, the resulting vibrations are dissipated by compression of the intermediate layer and movement of the core with respect to the intermediate layer.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Benoit Vincent, Bret Wahl, Mark Morgulis, Michael R. Peters, Jean-Pierre Renaudin

Publication number: 20030092507Abstract: A set of iron golf clubs is disclosed, each golf club having a head configured to provide enhanced flexibility for launching a golf ball. An upper portion of the body of each head has a reduced stiffness, while a lower portion of the body is configured with recesses that provide reduced stiffness toward the heel and the toe. A low central region supports the head at impact with the golf ball. The relative stiffness in the lower portion of the club head, varying from heel to toe, is designed in conjunction with a top to bottom difference in stiffness. Thus, the golf club head has enhanced flexibility and selectively increased stiffness, for improved performance and feel.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 18, 2002Publication date: May 15, 2003Inventors: Bret Wahl, David Anderson, Benoit Vincent, Nick Frame, Charles Golden

Patent number: 6554719Abstract: Disclosed is a set of golf clubs. The clubs are divided into at least a first group and at least a second group of golf clubs. The first group desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of low density metallic material. The second group of golf clubs desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of higher density metallic material than the density of the metallic material of the main body of each of the heads of the first group. The first group of clubs desirably comprises lower numbered clubs than the second group of clubs.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2001Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Michael R. Peters, Richard L. Rugge, Bret Wahl

Patent number: 6551200Abstract: A golf club head is provided having enhanced flexibility for launching a golf ball and is most advantageous for use in a wedge-type golf club. An upper portion of the body of the golf club head has a reduced stiffness while a lower portion of the body has reduced stiffness recesses located toward the heel and toe. A low central region supports the head at impact with the golf ball. The relative stiffness in the lower portion of the club head, varying from heel to toe, combines with a top to bottom difference in stiffness to provide enhanced flexibility and selectively increased stiffness for improved performance and feel.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2001Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Charles Golden, Bret Wahl, David Anderson, Benoit Vincent

Publication number: 20030032499Abstract: A golf club head is disclosed that comprises a body having a striking face, a rear cavity and a sole bar, wherein a recess is formed in the sole bar that extends generally from the rear cavity. An insert is located within the sole recess, the insert including a core and an intermediate layer that separates the core from the recess wall. The intermediate layer has a hardness and a modulus of elasticity that are less than that of the core, such that when the golf club head is used to strike a golf ball, the resulting vibrations are dissipated by compression of the intermediate layer and movement of the core with respect to the intermediate layer.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 3, 2002Publication date: February 13, 2003Inventors: Bret Wahl, Todd P. Patent number: 6309309Abstract: A golf club, particularly adapted for use with an oversized iron-type head including an iron-type head and a shaft particularly adapted to overcome the droop effect and increase stability upon off-center impact. The iron-type head defines a sole portion, an impact face, a back portion and a hosel extension defining an opening. The shaft has a butt portion and a tip portion. The tip portion has a substantially straight profile and defines an outer diameter d greater than or equal to 0.38 inches and less than or equal to 0.40 inches (i.e., 0.38 inches≦d≦0.40 inches). The shaft has a weight W less than or equal to 85 grams (W≦85 grams). At least a part of the tip portion is positioned within the opening of the head. Desirably, the tip portion has a length of greater than or equal to 2 inches.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1997Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: Taylor Made Golf Company, INCInventors: Todd P.
