  • Publication number: 20110283915
Abstract: A wheel impact reduction system for a rail vehicle includes a sensor, a control module, and a force reduction assembly. The sensor detects a discontinuity in a rail that is located upstream of a wheel of the rail vehicle in a direction of travel. The control module is communicatively coupled with the sensor. The control module determines whether to apply a correction force to the wheel based on the discontinuity detected by the sensor. The force reduction assembly is joined to the wheel of the rail vehicle and is communicatively coupled with the control module. The force reduction assembly reduces a wheel impact force imparted on the rail by the wheel by applying the correction force to the wheel.

  • Publication number: 20060255656
Abstract: A method and system is provided for detecting and performing diagnostics regarding an incipient ground fault that may occur in an electrical propulsion system of a traction vehicle, such as a locomotive, transit vehicle, or off-highway vehicle. The method allows providing a first ground connection for the electrical propulsion system. This first ground connection forms a grounding path generally used by the electrical propulsion system during normal operation. The method further allows providing a second ground connection for the electrical propulsion system. This second ground connection forms a grounding path selectively usable in lieu of the first ground connection. A control strategy is defined for switching between the first ground connection and the second ground connection. A respective leakage current associated with at least one of the first and second ground connections may be monitored.

  • Patent number: 7027900
Abstract: A method of dynamically controlling traction of a locomotive (V) having a plurality of axles (A1–A6) on each of which are mounted wheels (W) for moving the locomotive over a set of rails (R). A creep control signal (creep_n) is provided to a controller (TMTC) for each axle to move the locomotive over the rails, the creep control signal being a function of adhesion operation characteristics (tractive effort, torque, creep) for that axle. An advisory signal (ccc_n) combining values representative of the adhesion quality of the two axles is provided to the controller to maximize the tractive effort of the axle if the adhesion quality of the other axle is a maximum for the current rail conditions. This reduces the amount of time for the axle to attain its maximum tractive effort when rail conditions change.
