Patent number: 9182884Abstract: The detection of finger pinch, rotate, and tap gestures along with a translation and optionally liftoff motion to initiate certain actions is disclosed. To detect both the gesture and the translation, a certain amount of gesture scaling speed can be detected along with a certain amount of translation speed and distance traveled. For a finger pinch gesture, the scaling speed can be computed as the dot product of the velocity vectors of two or more fingers coming together. For a finger rotation gesture, the scaling speed can be computed as a cross product of the velocity vectors of the rotating fingers. The translation speed of a gesture can be computed as the average of the velocity vectors of any fingers involved in the gesture. The amount of gesture scaling speed and translation speed needed to trigger the recognition of a combined gesture with translation can be a predetermined ratio.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2014Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Wayne Carl Westerman, Brett G. Alten

Publication number: 20120154268Abstract: Remote control systems that can distinguish predetermined light sources from stray light sources, e.g., environmental light sources and/or reflections are provided. The predetermined light sources can be disposed in asymmetric substantially linear or two-dimensional patterns. The predetermined light sources also can be configured to exhibit signature characteristics. The predetermined light sources also can output light at different signature wavelengths. The predetermined light sources also can emit light polarized in one or more predetermined polarization axes. Remote control systems of the present invention also can include methods for adjusting an allocation of predetermined light sources and/or the technique used to distinguish the predetermined light sources from the stray light sources.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 16, 2011Publication date: June 21, 2012Applicant: APPLE INC.Inventor: Brett G. Alten

Patent number: 8099258Abstract: A sensor authenticated to a garment transfers information, either wirelessly or wired, to an external data processing device. Such information includes location information, physiometric data of the individual wearing the garment, garment performance and wear data (when the garment is an athletic shoe, for example). The external data processing device can be portable digital media players that are, in turn, in wireless communication with a server computer or other wireless devices.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2010Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Brett G. Alten, Robert Edward Borchers
