  • Patent number: 8837257
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments provide a computer-implemented method for generating a modulated acoustic carrier signal for wireless transmission from a speaker of a transmit device to a microphone of a receive device. Aspects of the exemplary embodiments include converting a message to binary data; modulating one or more selected frequencies for one or more acoustic carrier signals based on the binary data to generate one or more modulated acoustic carrier signals; filtering the one or more modulated acoustic carrier signals to remove any unintended audible harmonics created during modulation, including; equalizing the modulated acoustic carrier signal to pre-compensate for known degradations that will occur further along a signal path; setting a level of the modulated acoustic carrier signal for the intended application; and storing the modulated acoustic carrier signal in a buffer for subsequent output and transmission by the speaker.

  • Publication number: 20120179525
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for redeeming an electronic coupon comprises receiving on a transmit device the electronic coupon that includes an embedded identifier that indexes coupon data; playing the identifier of the electronic coupon over air from a speaker of the transmit device in proximity to a receive device; decoding the identifier in response to the receive device receiving the audio signal over the air; and using the identifier to access the coupon data including purchase discount information.

  • Publication number: 20120129453
Abstract: An acoustic dock for guiding placement and orientation of a mobile device for enhanced acoustic data transfer comprises a bottom surface; a plurality of sides attached to the bottom surface for receiving a mobile device having a transducer; and one or more transducers placed in proximity to at least one of the plurality of sides, where the acoustic dock is configured to assist orientation of the mobile device in the acoustic dock so that the mobile device transducer is adjacent to and in proximity to the one or more transducers of the acoustic dock to facilitate acoustic data communication.

  • Publication number: 20120051187
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product is provided for wirelessly transmitting and receiving data through sonic communication. A method and system is provided for devices to exchange data over the air using a sonic carrier signal. The transmit device has at least one sonic transducer that transmits a sonic carrier signal through the air in accordance with aspects of the present invention. A digital representation of the data is modulated consistent with a modulation protocol using one or more sonic transmission frequencies in accordance with present invention. The sonic transducer transmits the one or more sonic carrier signals carrying the modulated data over the air. Each sonic carrier signal has sufficient gain to carry the signal to a receiver device where the data from the one or more sonic carrier signals is demodulated. Aspects of the present invention receive modulated data through the air using at least one sonic transducer of a receive device.

  • Publication number: 20110169607
Abstract: Methods and systems for providing a long-range real-time location system comprise transmitting a power signal from one or more exciters to at least a portion of the tags, wherein the exciters are located a distance from the tags within a range required to power the tags; initiating transmission of the power signal by a reader that transmits a command signal instructing the exciters to transmit the power signal to the tags, wherein the reader is located a greater distance from the tags than the range required to power the tags; receiving by multiple wideband antennas on the reader, wideband signals from at least one of the tags, and associating with the wideband signals a time of arrival at each of the wideband antennas; and calculating by the reader a location of the at least one tag based on differences between the time of arrival at each of the wideband antennas.
