Publication number: 20110186521Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for preparation of water for various uses including blood treatment are described. In embodiments, fluid is passed either by pump or passively by gravity feed, through various filtration elements from a fluid source to a treatment fluid container. The latter forms a batch that may be used during treatment. The advantage of forming the batch before treatment is that the rate of filtering needn't match the rate of consumption during treatment which provides multiple benefits and liabilities to overcome, as discussed herein. Mechanisms for preparing pure water for infusion or medicaments are described such as elimination of chlorine and colloidal aluminum. Also various control mechanisms to help avoid contamination are describe.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2011Publication date: August 4, 2011Inventors: Jeffrey H. BURBANK, Brian C. GREEN, Dennis M. TREU, Christopher S. MCDOWELL, Goetz FRIEDERICHS

Patent number: 7976711Abstract: A method and device for blood treatments that use fluids such as dialysate and replacement fluid for renal replacement therapy. In an embodiment, fluid is passed either by pump or passively by gravity feed, through a microporous sterilization filter from a fluid source to a replacement fluid container. The latter forms a batch that may be used during treatment. The advantage of forming the batch before treatment is that the rate of filtering needn't match the rate of consumption during treatment. As a result, the sterilization filter can have a small capacity. In another embodiment, a filter is placed immediately prior to the point at which the sterile fluid is consumed by the treatment process. The latter may be used in combination with the former embodiment as a last-chance guarantee of sterility and/or that the fluid is free of air bubbles. It may also be used as the primary means of sterile-filtration.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2010Date of Patent: July 12, 2011Assignee: NxStage Medical, Inc.Inventors: James M. Brugger, Jeffrey H. Burbank, Brian C. Green

Publication number: 20080230450Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for preparation of water for various uses including blood treatment are described. In embodiments, fluid is passed either by pump or passively by gravity feed, through various filtration elements from a fluid source to a treatment fluid container The latter forms a batch that may be used during treatment. Methods and systems for creating multiple-treatment batches are described. Advantages of creating a multitreatment batch include the fact that the burden of treatment preparation can be reduced and the timing of the preparation of the batch can be independent of the treatment time. As described, there are various trade-offs and concerns with this approach which are addressed by the inventive embodiments.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2006Publication date: September 25, 2008Inventors: Jeffrey H. Patent number: 5891217Abstract: A rotary valve system which includes of a pair of valve assemblies each of which has valve parts with flat faces which, when pressed together and rotated, provide valving action between various ports incorporated in one valve part of each assembly. The first valve part of each assembly contains a circular array of through openings, each of which is connected to a conduit. The second valve part of each assembly contains several passages which provide communication between various openings of the first valve part and valve apertures located in the second valve part of each assembly. The second valve part of each assembly also contains one or more passages which provide communication between members of one or the other array of openings. The valve system can be effectively used to automate operation of a gas or liquid adsorption system comprising two or more adsorption vessels, the number of vessels being equivalent to the total number of openings in either array.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventors: Norberto O. Lemcoff, Mario A. Fronzoni, Michael E. Garrett, Brian C. Green, Timothy D. Atkinson, Alberto I. La Cava

The valve assembly can be effectively used to automate operation of a gas or liquid adsorption system comprising two or more adsorption vessels, the number of vessels being equivalent to the total number of openings in either array. Use of the valve assembly in an adsorption system eliminates the need for many of the valves required in conventional multivessel adsorption systems.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1996Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventors: Norberto O. Patent number: 5762104Abstract: This disclosure relates to a system for pumping a liquid from a storage tank, through a pipe and out of a valve of a liquid dispenser. The apparatus comprises a manifold housing having a main flow passage formed therein, a check valve mounted in said main flow passage and enabling liquid to flow from the storage tank to the liquid dispenser, and a manually-operated pressure relief mechanism around the check valve. The mechanism comprises a bypass flow passage formed in the housing in parallel with the check valve, and a stopper which normally closes the bypass flow passage. To relieve the liquid pressure, the stopper is manually moved to a relief position where it is removed from the bypass flow passage, thereby enabling the liquid to flow around the check valve. To resume normal operation, the stopper is returned to its normal position where it blocks the bypass flow passage. The stopper is movably mounted in a bore in the housing, and the bore extends to an opening at the exterior surface of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1995Date of Patent: June 9, 1998Assignee: Fe Petro Inc.Inventors: Brian C. Patent number: 5577895Abstract: This disclosure relates to a variable length pipe assembly for connection between a pump-motor unit and a manifold. The assembly is particularly useful in a gasoline dispensing system of a service or filling station. The assembly comprises an inner pair of pipes and an outer pair of pipes. The pipes of the inner pair have telescoped portions and outer ends that are connectable to the pump-motor unit and the manifold. The pipes of the outer pair also have telescoped portions and outer ends that are connectable to the pump-motor unit and the manifold. The inner pair is mounted within the outer pair, a first passage being formed within the inner pair and a second passage being formed by the annular space between the inner pair and the outer pair. A seal is provided between the telescoped portions of the inner pair and another seal is provided between the telescoped portions of the outer pair, and a clamp is provided for securing together the telescoped portions of the outer pair.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1995Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: FE Petro Inc.Inventors: Charles C. Franklin, Donald P. Kenney, Brian C. Green
