  • Patent number: 8628558
Abstract: A bone fixation assembly includes a plurality of bone fixation elements that each include a bone anchor configured to be implanted into underlying bone, such as a vertebra. Each bone anchor is received in an anchor seat, and the anchor seats are joined by a fixation rod so as to operatively couple and fix the position and orientation of the vertebrae relative to each other. The bone anchor is free to rotate relative to the anchor seat, and is also free to pivot in a desired direction relative to the anchor seat.

  • Publication number: 20120271365
Abstract: Spinal rod reduction apparatuses, systems, and methods are provided. In various examples, a rod reduction apparatus includes a first threaded member (130, 210, 330) including an engagement feature (138A, 138B, 220, 332, 334) configured to selectively anchor the first threaded member to the implantable screw assembly. A second threaded member (110, 230, 310) is configured to threadably engage with the first threaded member. The second threaded member is axially movable with respect to the first threaded member with rotation of the second threaded member. A spinal rod urging member (120, 240, 320) is axially movable with the second threaded member. The urging member includes a bearing surface (126, 242, 320) that is configured to selectively abut the spinal rod and selectively urge the spinal rod toward the implantable screw assembly with rotation of the second threaded member in a first rotational direction.

  • Patent number: 7371239
Abstract: A surgical instrument is provided for urging a longitudinal spinal member into a bone fastener. The surgical instrument may include a holder assembly for engaging a bone fastener, the holder assembly preferably comprising a pair of pivotably connected members arranged in a scissor type configuration, and a reducing mechanism for moving the spinal rod with respect to the bone fastener, the reducing mechanism including a rod contacting member and an outer support structure having an opening for receiving at least a portion of the holder assembly and a cavity for receiving at least a portion of the vertical drive mechanism which is sized and configured to threadably engage the holder assembly. The holder assembly preferably includes a pair of jaws each having an extension formed thereon for engaging a recess formed on the lateral side walls of the bone fastener so that the holder assembly can engage the bone fastener without extending into the U-shaped channel.

  • Publication number: 20080051794
Abstract: A reduction sleeve for facilitating insertion of a spinal rod into a rod-receiving channel formed in a bone fixation element. The reduction sleeve may include a through-bore sized and configured to receive the bone fixation element and a substantially transverse channel sized and configured to receive the spinal rod. The channel being substantially aligned with the rod-receiving channel formed in the bone fixation element so that, once the bone fixation element has been inserted into the reduction sleeve, the spinal rod can pass through the aligned channels. The reduction sleeve may also include at least one break-off point or region for facilitating breaking and removal of the reduction sleeve once the spinal rod has been clamped into the rod-receiving channel of the bone fixation element.

  • Publication number: 20060025768
Abstract: A system for introducing an elongated spinal rod comprising a bone fastener having a head, the head including a top end, a bottom end, and a pair of side walls connected at the bottom end defining an elongated U-shaped channel having a first longitudinal axis and a top opening located at the top end. The top opening and the channel further define a passageway configured for receiving the spinal rod and each side wall further defining a first end face and a second end face, the second end face opposite the first end face. A bone engaging element extends from the bottom end of the head for anchoring the bone fastener to the bone. The system further comprises a tool for introducing the rod into the U-shaped channel. The tool includes a first member having a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end is configured for guiding the rod through the passageway to introduce the rod into the U-shaped channel through the top opening.
