  • Publication number: 20070000626
Abstract: A method for adding cooking liquor into a vapor phase continuous digester for producing chemical cellulose pulp from cellulose chips including: introducing a slurry of the cellulose chips from a feed system to an inverted top separator in a top vapor phase section of the digester; distributing the slurry of the cellulose chips from the top separator into the vapor phase section of the digester; passing liquor through a conduit included with the drive shaft assembly of the top separator, and introducing the liquor from the conduit into the slurry as the slurry flows through the top separator or is distributed from the separator into the vapor phase section.

  • Publication number: 20040060673
Abstract: An apparatus and process for solvent pulping of cellulose-containing biomass utilizes at least one steaming vessel, a plug screw feeder or compression screw device, at least one super-atmospheric impregnation vessel, a solvent delignification reactor capable of operating at a pressure of 350 psig or more, and a solvent containing line for introducing solvent-containing liquor at the plug screw feeder outlet or compression screw device outlet. The process and system can also include at least one series connected pressure diffuser and optionally a retention tube downstream of each pressure diffuser to provide sufficient retention time to substantially preclude re-deposition of lignin on the cellulose fibers of the biomass, a blow tank connected to the last of the pressure diffusers and retention tubes, and vessels for multistage alcohol washing.

  • Patent number: 5607545
Abstract: Method and apparatus for ozone bleaching a medium consistency cellulosic fiber suspension include feeding the fiber suspension and an ozone in carrier gas stream under pressure into a fluidizing mixer; intimately and uniformly mixing the fiber suspension with the ozone to achieve a bleaching reaction; passing the mixture into a first reaction vessel to permit the bleaching reaction to proceed and to consume a major part of the ozone; adding a second bleaching chemical to the mixture; separating the excess ozone and carrier gas from the mixture in a second considerably larger vessel and removing the fiber suspension from the second vessel after the effective second bleaching reaction.

  • Patent number: 5266159
Abstract: A method and system are provided for controlling the feed of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material (e.g. wood chips) to a continuous digester utilizing a chips meter of variable speed. A quality of the chips related to mass flow--preferably density--is continuously determined, preferably while the material is in free fall, not immersed in liquid. The speed of the material meter is controlled in response to the quality determined to provide a target mass flow of material from the meter to the digester. A nuclear type density gauge may be utilized having a source and a detector mounted on opposite sides of a chip chute, and above the level of liquid in a chip chute so that density is determined during free fall of the chips, not immersed in liquid. A level sensor may also be associated with the chip chute with a shield between the nuclear source and the level sensor. The chip meter speed is controlled in the range of about 0-16 rpm.

  • Patent number: 5183536
Abstract: In an atmospheric diffuser for the treatment of paper pulp (thickening, bleaching, and/or washing) the flow of backflushing liquid is controlled so as to maximize the effective treatment of the pulp. The pulp passes upwardly in a vessel. A number of annular screen assemblies are provided, with at least one screen associated with each screen assembly. The lower screen includes a barrier wall with a passage in the barrier wall adjacent the bottom end of the screen. Liquid which flows through the screen must flow to the passage in order to be withdrawn from the vessel, as the screen is slowly moved upwardly. When the screen is rapidly moved downwardly to cause backflushing, the backflushing liquid at the top end of the screen is liquid that recently passed through the screen at that point, so the pulp at that point --which is the cleanest along the length of the screen--has a minimal chance of being contaminated.
