  • Publication number: 20230383432
Abstract: Various single crystals are disclosed including sapphire as well as methods of forming the same. A method of forming a crystalline structure is disclosed as well. The method can include providing a melt in a crucible having a die. The die can include a ventilation opening. The method can further include growing the crystalline structure from the die using an enclosed seed. The single crystals can have desirable geometric properties, including a length greater than a diameter greater than a thickness.

  • Patent number: 6012303
Abstract: The present invention provides for a method and articles produced from this method for eutectically bonding together single crystal elements, such as sapphire, to form a strong bond therebetween which can withstand high temperatures and chemical attack. The eutectic bonding mixture of the present invention can include a Group IIIA compound, such as yttria.

  • Patent number: 5291937
Abstract: An extension is provided on an end of an article having internal passageways and having a directionally oriented microstructure by using the article end as a growth seed in a molten material compatible with material from which the article end is made. The extension is directionally solidified as integral with and as an extension of the article end and with a microstructure compatible with that of the article end.
