  • Patent number: 7479264
Abstract: A method for producing synthetic magadiite, including the step of: heating a liquid aqueous colloidal silica suspension, the liquid aqueous colloidal silica suspension having a mole ratio of sodium hydroxide to silica and a mole ratio of water to silica effective to produce a synthetic magadiite wherein more than fifty percent by weight of the synthetic magadiite is platy synthetic magadiite. The synthetic platy magadiite can be converted to the acid form and: (a) heated to produce quartz-like plates; or Coalkylated to produce an organophilic material. In another aspect the instant invention is a method for the production of platy sodium octasilicate which includes the step of: heating a liquid aqueous colloidal silica dispersion containing silica, sodium oxide, and water, the mole ratio of the silica to the sodium oxide being in the range of from about 3.5 to about 10.

The synthetic platy magadiite can be converted to the acid form and: (a) heated to produce quartz-like plates; or (b) alkylated to produce an organophilic material. A method for the production of platy sodium octasilicate and a method for preparing a liquid aqueous colloidal silica dispersion having a mole ratio of silica to sodium oxide of 3.5 to 10 are further disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6255499
Abstract: A process and catalyst for the hydro-oxidation of an olefin having three or more carbon atoms, such as propylene, to form an olefin oxide, such as propylene oxide. The process involves contacting the olefin with oxygen under reaction conditions in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst. The catalyst contains oxidized gold dispersed on a titanium-containing support, preferably, a support having a plurality of titanium coordination environments, for example, titanium grafted onto a titanosilicate. Selectivity to olefin oxide is high at good conversion of the olefin. The catalyst uses hydrogen efficiently and exhibits a long lifetime.

  • Patent number: 6177373
Abstract: The invention is comprised of a procedure for applying molecular sieve films to the surface of different substrates. This procedure is characterized in that microcrystals of the molecular sieves in question bind to the substrate surface in a first step as a monolayer, and are then, in a second step, allowed to grow into a thin, continuous and dense film. Molecular sieve films are of interest in application areas such as preparing membranes, catalysts, sensor devices and polymer reinforcing fillers.

  • Patent number: 5863516
Abstract: The present invention relates to colloidal suspensions of discrete particles of colloidal zeolite and a method for preparing such zeolite from clear tetraalkylammonium stabilized aluminiumsilicate solutions. Smaller amounts of well defined and controlled metal hydroxide solutions are added to these alumiumsilicate solutions to enable the synthesis of a specific zeolite as well as to control zeolite yield. The colloidal suspensions are characterized by an average particle size of less than 250 nanometers and preferably, less than 200 nanometers together with the fact that the particle size distribution expressed as the geometric standard deviation is less than 1.30 and preferably less than 1.20. Zeolite sols synthesized according to this invention display Tyndall light scattering typical for colloidal suspensions as well as a very low rate of sedimentation due to the small particle size.
