Publication number: 20160230579Abstract: A rotor disk assembly comprises a circular body configured to rotate about an axis, a contoured slot formed partially through the circular body in an axial direction, and a protrusion extending radially from the circular body adjacent the contoured slot. A turbine or compressor assembly is also provided. The turbine or compressor assembly may include a first disk configured to rotate about an axis, a first contoured slot formed partially through the first disk, a first protrusion adjacent to the first contoured slot and extending radially outward from the first disk, and a first blade disposed in the first contoured slot and configured to engage the first protrusion.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 6, 2015Publication date: August 11, 2016Applicant: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Brian J. Patent number: 7927189Abstract: A tool for use in an abrasive machining process has a body extending along a central longitudinal axis from a first end to a tip end. An abrasive material is located on the tip end. A central recess is formed in the tip end.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2004Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Daniel F. Grady, Jon C. Patent number: 7927069Abstract: A rotor blade assembly includes a slot for mounting a rotor blade that extends partially through a rotor disk and a continuous uninterrupted hoop seal that extends about the circumference of the rotor disk. The rotor disk includes an integrally formed seal that includes at least one knife edge disposed concentrically about the rotor disk. The slot receives a root portion of a rotor blade but does not extend through the seal. As the seal remains an uninterrupted full hoop about the circumference of the rotor disk, additional rigidity and strength are realized. The increased rigidity and strength provided by the full hoop structure provides for the reduction in material and physical dimensions without compromising desired performance of the seal.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2006Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Robert E. Erickson, Robert A. Charbonneau, Brian J. Schwartz, Trevor S. Smith

Patent number: 7582004Abstract: A coolant nozzle is used in a machine tool having a rotating bit. The nozzle includes a through-aperture for accommodating the bit. The nozzle has a coolant inlet and a number of coolant outlets at more than one angular position about the through-aperture. Internal surface portions define one or more passageways between the inlet and the outlets.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2003Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Brian J. Schwartz, Robert N. Davie, Jr., Bernard D. Vaillette, Jon C. Hammett, Allan B. Packman, Timothy L. Brown, James D. Campbell, Jr.

Publication number: 20090094831Abstract: An integrally bladed rotor includes a central hub and a plurality of airfoils or blades. The blades are repaired by rebuilding their surfaces beyond the original shape, such as by adding weld material. The contour of the blade is then returned to the desired shape using superabrasive quills.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventors: Brian J. Schwartz, Robert E. Erickson, Paul R. Faughnan, JR., Bernard D. Vaillette

Patent number: 7144307Abstract: A process for point superabrasive machining of a nickel based material comprising the steps of providing a tool having a grinding surface coated with a superabrasive material, orienting the tool relative to a surface of the nickel based material to be machined so that there is point contact between the surface to be machined and the grinding surface, and forming a part by removing material at the point contract by rotating the tool. The tool comprises an enlarged portion, a tip portion, and a first shaft portion extending from the enlarged portion to the tip portion, the first shaft portion and the tip portion being coated with an abrasive material, and the first shaft portion having a constant diameter.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2003Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Brian J. Schwartz, Daniel F. Grady, Daniel J. Wright

Patent number: 7101263Abstract: The present invention relates to a quill to be used to superabrasively machine complex shapes, such as airfoil shapes, into a substrate. The quill has a shaft portion, an enlarged head portion adjacent the shaft portion, and a tapered grinding portion adjacent the enlarged head portion. The tapered grinding portion has a layer of grit material selected from the group consisting of diamonds and cubic boron nitride thereon. In a preferred embodiment, the quill is a vitrified or plated cubic boron nitride quill on the grinding portion. A method of using the tool is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2002Date of Patent: September 5, 2006Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Brian J. Schwartz, Bernard D. Vaillette, Chung Y. Wu, Gennaro J. Colacino, Allan B. Packman
