    Abstract: An optical modulator comprises a body of deformable material having a state of strain which changes in response to an applied electric field. The body has a modulating surface for effecting the light modulation. Opposite ends of the body, with the modulating surface between the opposite ends, are held by holding means so that changes in the state of strain result in displacement of the modulating surface between first and second positions. Electric means are provided to apply an electric field to the body to effect light modulation.
