    Abstract: An angioplasty device and particle trap for use in removal of a particle from a small diameter vessel or vessel-like structure is disclosed. One embodiment includes a catheter for insertion into a vessel-like structure, the catheter having a catheter wall and a movable member, a trap operably connected to the catheter wall and to the movable member, wherein relative motion between the catheter wall and the movable member actuates the trap. In one embodiment, the expanded trap is formed from struts in a spiral-shaped configuration. In one embodiment, the contracted trap forms a waist to creates a pinch-point to trap particles. In one embodiment, the contracted trap forms a cocoon-like structure to further trap particles. In one embodiment, the angioplasty device includes a handle to actuate the trap from a contracted position to an expanded position and return to a contracted position. The handle provides rotational or longitudinal or both types of movement to actuate the trap.

    Abstract: The present invention is a single apparatus that can be adjusted through a range of diameters to measure an anatomical tissue annulus. The apparatus includes an elongated support member having a proximal end and a distal end. An operator actuated movable member is joined to the proximal end of the elongated support member while an adjustable member is joined to the distal end of the elongated support member. The adjustable member has a reference axis and an outer curved surface selectively positionable in response to the operator actuated member. In particular, the outer curved surface can be selectively positioned between an inner position proximate the reference axis and an outer position spaced apart from the reference axis.

    Abstract: A medical catheter steering construction is described that is particularly well suited for steering ablation catheters that utilize coaxial transmission lines. An elongated coaxial transmission line is received within a lumen in the flexible tubular member. An antenna is coupled to the center conductor of the coaxial transmission line. A shield termination is secured to the shield portion of the coaxial transmission line. A steering wire that extends through the tubular member to permit a user to steer the catheter during insertion is attached to the shield termination. With this arrangement, when the catheter is inserted into the vessel of a patient, the tip of the catheter may be steered by pulling on the steering wire. In one embodiment of the invention, a distal portion of the tubular member has a stiffness that is significantly less than the stiffness of the majority of the tubular member to facilitate bending during steering. Suitable methods for making such catheters are also described.

    Abstract: A delivery catheter for introducing living matter into a body passageway or cavity of a female mammal comprises a hollow, flexible, dual lumen catheter having substantially tubular-shaped collection chamber for holding the living matter. An ejection port is formed adjacent to the distal end of the collection chamber and an actuator port is formed at its proximal end. A guide tube having a lumen, is positioned coaxially within the collection chamber with the respective distal and proximal ends of the guide tube and the collection chamber joined together in fluid-tight sealing engagements. In an alternate embodiment, the lumina are separated to create a guide wire lumen which is substantially parallel to a transfer lumen. Also, the distal end of the catheter is beveled to recess the opening of the guide wire lumen from the port of the collection chamber in the transfer lumen. In operation, the delivery catheter is inserted into the body passageway over a prepositioned guide wire.

    Abstract: A steerable catheter guide comprised of an outer tube and an inner member surrounded by and rotatable with respect to said outer tube is disclosed. The steerable catheter guide also includes a formable member bonded to said inner member and said outer tube in the area of their respective distal ends. This design causes any rotation of the inner member with respect to the outer member to impart a torque directly to the distal end of the guide making steering much easier and less erratic.

    Abstract: An angioplasty catheter having an outer tubular member and a coaxially aligned inner tubular member. The outer tube is of a first predetermined diameter over a majority of its length, but then tapers down, in a transition zone, to a second predetermined diameter less than the first and which extends to the catheter's distal tip. The inner tube has a distal end shaped to mate with the inside surface of the outer tube in the transition zone to form a seal when the inner tube is advanced in the distal direction. An expander is secured to the outer tube and inflatable by perfusing a fluid in the zone between the outer and inner tubes and through ports formed through the wall of the outer tube in the transition zone. By manipulating the proximal end of the inner tube, blood or other fluids may be perfused or exasperated and made to inflate or deflate the expander, the distal end of the inner tube acting as a valve, seating with the inner surface of the outer tube in the transition zone.
