    Abstract: An improved transmission (10) having enhanced torque capacity gearings for only the upper ratios (15th, 16th) and a powertrain system (100) utilizing same are provided. The powertrain system includes a torque-controlled engine (E) and a controller (208), preferably defined by the engine controller (EC), for limiting transmission input torque in the lower ratios.
