Patent number: 7829838Abstract: A mobile storage unit system includes a vehicle guide arrangement that navigates a forklift or other vehicle along aisles formed between mobile storage units. The vehicle guide arrangement allows an operator to identify the aisle containing a desired loading or unloading point and the guide arrangement defines a path of travel for the vehicle along that aisle to ensure that the vehicle has sufficient room to perform the loading and unloading functions. The mobile storage unit system may also include one or more perceptible indicators, such as lamps, that provide the operator a signal when an aisle is fully open and ready to receive the vehicle. A corresponding signal may also be provided to the vehicle guide arrangement so that the vehicle is not navigated along an aisle until the aisle is fully open. This ensures that the vehicle has the space needed to maneuver during the loading and unloading process.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2008Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Assignee: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: Mark P. Patent number: 7770740Abstract: A support for the lower ends of elongated articles stored in an upright position, such as the lower ends of firearms contained within a storage cabinet. The support includes a base, and one or more support members are releasably engageable with the base. Each support member receives and secures the lower end of a firearm relative to the base. Each support member is releasably engaged with the base via one or more releasable fasteners that extend through openings in the base and the support member. The base may include a series of slots, within which the fasteners are movable to adjust the position of the support members on the base. The one or more support members may be a single support member that supports the lower end of each firearm, and a series of support members are mounted along the length of the base to support the lower end of a series of articles.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2006Date of Patent: August 10, 2010Assignee: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: William H. Punzel, Matthew A. Tourdot, Brian R. Nemec, Donald T. Neste

Patent number: 7583037Abstract: The present invention is a mobile storage unit including an electric motor operably connected to wheels movably supporting the unit, and a motor brake operably connected to the electric motor. A shaft is rotatably mounted to the unit and supports the wheels on which the unit moves, and is engaged with an electric motor. The electric motor operates to rotate the shaft and the wheels to move the unit in the desired direction. Upon deactivation of the motor, the motor brake, which is also engaged with the shaft, operates to prevent any further rotation of the shaft to maintain the mobile storage unit in a specified location regardless of deflection of the surface on which the storage unit is positioned.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2006Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: Brian P. Bourke, Steven M. Lehmann, Brian R. Nemec

Patent number: 7370587Abstract: A carriage of a mobile storage system is adapted to support at least one storage unit for movement on a rail. The carriage generally includes a wheel mount structure, and a wheel mounting subassembly that includes a shaft having opposing ends, a wheel mounted to the shaft, and a first and a second mounting members that rotatably support the shaft. The wheel is located between the first and second mounting members such that the ends of the shaft extend outwardly from the first and second mounting members. The carriage further includes a cooperating mounting arrangement configured to non-rotatably mount the first and second mounting members to the wheel mount structure. The wheel extends downward from the wheel mount structure to engage the rail, and the ends of the shaft extend outward to engage a drive shaft that imparts rotation to the shaft and wheel so as to move the carriage on the rail.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2004Date of Patent: May 13, 2008Assignee: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: Steven L. Publication number: 20040104647Abstract: A mobile storage system includes a series of carriages which are movably mounted to a series of rails supported on a surface such as a floor. Storage units, such as drawer-type file cabinets, are adapted to be engaged with each carriage, and are movable on the rails along with the carriages. Each carriage is modular in construction, and incorporates a series of mobile housing assemblies interconnected by a structural cross-brace arrangement. At least one end of the carriage includes an end panel arrangement which overlies a sidewall of an endmost one of the storage units. The end panel arrangement includes a frame defining an interior, and one or more cover members are demountably secured to the frame so as to selectively cover the interior of the frame and to conceal the sidewall of the endmost storage units. A series of retainer members are interconnected with each carriage, and interact with the rails so as to prevent upward movement of the carriage relative to the rails.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 24, 2003Publication date: June 3, 2004Applicant: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: Brian R. Nemec, Steven L. Janson, Fraser D. Houghton, John R. Edwards

Patent number: 6669314Abstract: A mobile storage system includes carriages mounted to rails supported on a floor, for mobilizing storage units such as drawer-type file cabinets. Each carriage incorporates mobile housing assemblies interconnected by a cross-brace arrangement. One end of the carriage includes an end panel arrangement that overlies a sidewall of an endmost storage unit, and which includes a frame and one or more cover members demountably secured to the frame so as to conceal the sidewall of the endmost storage unit. Each carriage includes retainers that interact with one of the rails so as to prevent upward movement of the carriage relative to the rails, and also function to mount one of the storage units to the carriage. The carriages and the rail and floor system are modular, enabling the components of the system to be shipped knocked-down and assembled on site, and to be expanded or contracted after installation.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: Spacesaver CorporationInventors: Brian R.
