  • Publication number: 20240026936
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses can be used to adjust the torque transfer capacity and improve the overall performance and longevity of a clutch assembly. Through the use of various improved clutch components disclosed herein, it is possible to: (1) increase clutch apply forces through an increase in the fluid pressure apply surface area, or piston reaction area, of a clutch piston, thereby increasing frictional forces generated within a clutch pack for transferring input torque from a drive shaft to a driven shaft; (2) improve clutch plate contact conditions through a more rigid clutch pressure plate configuration, thereby reducing clutch pack/plate distortion and supporting structure deformation and/or wear that can otherwise lead to excessive heat generation and overall clutch performance degradation and/or failure; and/or (3) improve the clutch assembly's ability to dissipate and/or tolerate heat generated through clutch plate friction by means of an improved clutch pack configuration.

  • Patent number: 10253827
Abstract: A piston apply ring for providing a more uniform load distribution from an apply piston to clutch plates in a clutch apply piston assembly, effectively increasing the lifetime of various components of the clutch apply piston assembly, is disclosed. An L-shaped cross-sectional shape of the piston apply ring helps locate the apply ring on the clutch apply piston and prevents torsional movement between the apply ring and the apply piston. Various alternative embodiments are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20150075897
Abstract: Automotive drive shafts having slip yoke assemblies that are designed and configured to transmit torque and allow for axial movement while also minimizing driveline vibrations. In some embodiments, the slip yoke assemblies may include one or more bearings that minimize angular misalignment and resist drive shaft bending forces. In some embodiments, the bearings may include a pair of precision mating diameters on a yoke shaft and splined sleeve. In yet other embodiments, the slip yoke assembly may include internal rod wipers to seal out environmental contaminants and retain lubricants.

  • Patent number: 8366556
Abstract: An apparatus and method for limiting torque transferred from an engine or motor to a drive shaft or other components. In some embodiments, the torque-limiting device has a spindle disposed within both coupling flanges to increase the resistance to radial forces and to maintain coaxial alignment of the flanges and attached drive shafts. In some embodiments, the axial spacing of bearings that enable rotation of the coupling flanges is based upon the diameter of the spindle. In another embodiment, torque-limiting devices that maintain coaxial alignment may be used to modify vehicle drive shafts to enable long distance towing for long durations at high speeds.
