    Abstract: An air filter element fits upon an air cleaner housing with a bar element that is received into the outlet face of the air filter element. The air filter element has a receiver extending into the outlet face to accommodate the bar. In the case of a deep pleated pack for the filter element, a widened split may be provided to accommodate the bar. A protective member that can be provided as part of a basket may project into the outlet face to protect the air filter element pack at the receiver.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided, for forming a filter element including a media pack in the form of a coiled fluted filter media, by winding the web of fluted filter media around a pair of tools of a mandrel. The tools engage the sides of the filter media. The tools define a major to provide the media pack with a oblong or elongated shape. The web may be fed at constant linear speed, and/or a motor may be controlled in a manner to provide constant driving torque to maintain a constant tension on the web. The winding apparatus and methods may include apparatus or methods to modify the feed path of the web to adjust the tension of the web as it is being wound. Further, the coiled media packs can be fixtured to prevent relaxation. A method may form various shaped media packs with the same apparatus.

    Abstract: An air filter element having end caps molded of foam material, and in which one of the foam end caps also employs the foam material as a radial seal gasket. Tubular inner and outer liners support a tubular filter element. The first ends are molded in a closed urethane end cap sealing one end of the filter element. The other end is molded to provide an open end cap in the form of an annular ring which encases the filter element and the liners, and provides a radial seal gasket. A substantially rigid plastic ring has a base embedded in the open end cap annular ring, and an upstanding flange which carries the radial seal gasket.
