Abstract: A method of deploying plugging devices in a well can include a spacing between the plugging devices by controlling a ratio flow rates through intersecting pipes. A deployment apparatus can include an actuator and a release structure that releases the plugging devices into a conduit connected to a tubular string in the well. Another method of deploying plugging devices in a well can include operating an actuator, thereby displacing a release structure, and the release structure releasing the plugging devices into the well in response to operating the actuator. Another deployment apparatus can include intersecting pipes and a valve that selectively permits and prevents displacement of the plugging devices through one of the pipes.

  • Patent number: 10024136
Abstract: A well system can include a well tool with a retarder chemical. The retarder chemical is released from the well tool into an annulus and retards setting of cement therein. A method of retarding setting of cement at a location in an annulus can include releasing a retarder chemical from a well tool connected in a casing string, after the cement is placed in the annulus. A well tool can include a valve that controls fluid communication via a port between an exterior of the tool and a flow passage extending through the tool, an annular recess, and a dispersible annular exterior component received in the recess. Another well tool can include a valve that controls fluid communication between an exterior of the tool and a flow passage extending through the well tool, an internal chamber, and a retarder chemical in the chamber.

  • Publication number: 20180163504
Abstract: A method can include conveying a dispensing tool through a wellbore, the dispensing tool including an enclosure containing plugging devices, and then opening the enclosure by cutting a material of the enclosure, thereby releasing the plugging devices from the enclosure into the wellbore at a downhole location. A dispensing tool can include a container having an enclosure therein, the enclosure including a flexible material that contains the plugging devices, and an end of the enclosure being secured to a member displaceable by an actuator. The enclosure material is cut in response to displacement of the member by the actuator. A plugging device can include at least one body configured to engage an opening in the well and block fluid flow through the opening, and multiple fibers including staple fibers or filaments formed into yarn.

  • Publication number: 20180148994
Abstract: A method of restoring flow through an opening in a well, the opening being blocked by a plugging device, can include conveying a well tool into the well, contacting the plugging device with the well tool, and permitting flow through the opening as a result of the contacting step. Another method of restoring flow through an opening blocked by a plugging device in a well can include conveying a well tool into the well, reducing pressure in the well with the well tool, and permitting flow through the opening as a result of the pressure reducing step.

  • Patent number: 9920592
Abstract: A well tool can include an operator device with an operator profile and at least two routes, and an indexing device with a cam and a cam follower including a structure. The structure engages the routes in succession in response to relative displacement between the operator profile and cam. A method can include causing relative displacement between an operator device and an indexing device in one direction, thereby causing a structure to disengage from one route of the operator device and displace an initial distance between two routes in response to engagement between the cam follower and a cam, and causing relative displacement between the operator and indexing devices in an opposite direction, thereby causing the structure to displace a remaining distance between the routes in response to engagement between the cam follower and an operator profile of the operator device, and to displace along the second route.

  • Publication number: 20180073321
Abstract: A method of treating each of multiple formation zones in a subterranean well can include isolating two of the zones from each other in the wellbore with a plug assembly positioned in the wellbore; treating one of the zones by flowing a treatment fluid through openings that provide fluid communication between the wellbore and one of the zones; then blocking flow through the openings; increasing pressure in the wellbore in response to the blocking; and opening the plug assembly in response to the pressure increasing. A well treatment system for treating each of multiple zones intersected by a wellbore can include multiple plug assemblies in the wellbore, each of the plug assemblies isolating a respective adjacent pair of the zones from each other in the wellbore. Each of the plug assemblies opens in response to a respective predetermined pressure differential applied across the plug assembly.
