  • Patent number: 8203320
Abstract: A switch mode converter converts an input DC voltage applied at one level at the converter input to an output DC voltage at a second level at the converter output. A switch is arranged to switch the input DC voltage on and off during each cycle of a plurality of cycles. An energy storage unit temporarily stores energy from the input source voltage when the switch is on, and releases energy when the switch is off during each cycle. Input energy stored is equal to the energy released with each cycle and achieves equilibrium when the converter is operating into normal loads. A reset mechanism provides additional reset voltage during each cycle to achieve equilibrium when the converter is operating in a fault condition.

Abstract: A switch mode converter is configured to convert an input DC voltage applied at one level at the converter input to an output DC voltage at a second level at the converter output. The converter comprises: a switch configured to switch the input DC voltage on and off during each cycle of a plurality of cycles; energy storage configured to temporarily store energy from the input source voltage when the switch is on, and release energy when the switch is off during each cycle, wherein the input energy stored is equal to the energy released with each cycle and achieves equilibrium when the converter is operating into normal loads; and a reset mechanism configured to provide additional reset voltage during each cycle to achieve equilibrium when the converter is operating in a fault condition.

  • Publication number: 20040174146
Abstract: A system may comprise a DC-to-DC converter, a load coupled to and receiving an operating voltage from the converter and an output adjust circuit coupled to the converter and the load. The output adjust circuit may receive a first voltage from the load, generate a second voltage indicative both of the first voltage and of an offset signal, and provide the second voltage to the converter. The DC-to-DC converter may control the operating voltage using the second voltage.

  • Patent number: 5461303
Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is a boost preregulator circuit which includes a bridge rectifier, an inductor, a boost diode and an output capacitor. A power transistor is switched on and off across a junction of the boost inductor and boost rectifier according to a variable duty cycle. Proper variation of the duty cycle results in a power factor corrected AC line current waveform with an in-phase sinusoidal shape.

  • Patent number: 5274274
Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is a high-side driver comprising a pair of differential input controls each of which are coupled to a pair of comparators having first and second thresholds set at Vddh-1.5 volts and Vddh-2.5 volts, respectively. A logic block in front of a set-reset flip-flop recognizes only signals on the dual-input control lines where one is less than the Vddh-1.5 volt threshold and the other exceeds the Vddh-2.5 volt threshold. If signals on either or both of the dual-input control lines are between Vddh-1.5 volts and Vddh-2.5 volts, the logic block will prevent a change of state of the flip-flop which controls a high-voltage switch transistor connected to a load. The high-side driver further includes an under-voltage lockout to prevent false operation of the high-voltage switch transistor during the initial power up phase.

  • Patent number: 5008794
Abstract: Flyback converters can generate multiple voltage levels by rectifying and filtering multiple windings on a single power transformer. Different voltages should be related by the turns ratio of the respective windings. Transformer leakage inductance causes leading edge voltage spikes on some windings causing the filters to peak charge to a higher value than expected. The addition of a small coupled inductor between two or more windings will block the leading edge spike allowing the filter to charge to the correct voltage. The turns ratio of the coupled inductor is selected to cancel the leading edge voltage spike on the desired winding. The coupled inductor can be used to correct the voltage of a winding used for feedback purposes as well as improving the cross regulation between multiple converter outputs.
