When an end-user makes a request to store data, the storage device communicates with a storage policy rules software engine. The storage policy rules software engine compares the user activity to a set of previously established rules and then invokes a translation software engine to translate the intended actions into instructions specific for a particular data archiving product in order for that application to archive data as intended.

When a user makes a request to store, read, or manipulate data on the NAS device, the NAS device provides an indication of this request to a management tool running on a remote system through the event enabling framework software. The management tool reviews the request in light of its previously established policy-based data storage management configuration and subsequently informs the NAS device, via the event enabling framework software, to either accept or not accept the user's request to store, read or modify data on the NAS device.

In this manner, the user interface can be optimized for those purposes while the archiving application can by optimized for its purposes without regard to ease of use of the user interface.

When a client machine requests sensitive data from the data storage device, the data storage device interrogates the sentinel software on the server machine to determine if this client machine has previously been deemed to have proper encryption procedures and authentication. If the sentinel server software has this information stored, it provides an approval or denial to the storage device that releases the data if appropriate. If the sentinel server software does not have this information at hand or the previous information is too old, the sentinel server interrogates the sentinel software that resides on the client machine which scans the client machine and provides an encryption update to the sentinel server software, following which data will be released if appropriate.

Thus storage management software can compare the true file type of a file being inspected to rules established by an administrator and subsequently inform the storage device to either accept or not accept the users request to store data.
