Patent number: 11781708Abstract: A rotational device provides rotation of a location of interest about a rotational axis and includes first and second sockets each having three contact points distributed about the rotational axis. The contact points of each socket may be on convex surfaces and a spindle assembly is held between the sockets, which face each other along the rotational axis. The spindle assembly has a first convex surface centered about the rotational axis that contacts the contact points of the first socket, and a second convex surface that contacts the contact points of the second socket. The spindle assembly also has a drive shaft aligned with the rotational axis. Linear stages may be used to provide adjustment in one or more mutually perpendicular directions. An alternative embodiment uses a spindle assembly with two curved contact surfaces that contact respective curved surfaces that are adjacent to the rotational axis rather than aligned therewith.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2022Date of Patent: October 10, 2023Inventor: Bruce Becker

Patent number: 9662451Abstract: A device useful for making retrobulbar injections includes an inner syringe contained within an outer syringe. A spring retained within the outer syringe biases the inner syringe proximally, which a catch mechanism on the two syringes prevents the inner syringe from moving out of the outer syringe. A distal needle on the inner syringe is movable within a distal sheath of the outer syringe, and can be extended beyond the distal end of the sheath to permit the device to piece more resilient tissues, and can be withdrawn by action of the spring within the sheath to protect more delicate tissues from the needle.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2012Date of Patent: May 30, 2017Inventor: Bruce Becker

Publication number: 20160175535Abstract: A syringe and needle assembly includes a needle that extends through the barrel of the syringe and is attached to a proximal portion of the syringe. The distal end of the needle extends through a sleeve attached to the distal end of the syringe. The proximal end of the needle includes a spring which biases the needle proximally, so that the distal tip of the needle is normally retracted within the sleeve.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2014Publication date: June 23, 2016Inventor: Bruce Becker

Patent number: 8945086Abstract: A syringe and needle assembly includes a needle that extends through the barrel of the syringe and is attached to a proximal portion of the syringe. The distal end of the needle extends through a sleeve attached to the distal end of the syringe. The proximal end of the needle includes a spring which biases the needle proximally, so that the distal tip of the needle is normally retracted within the sleeve. Publication number: 20080281349Abstract: A set of sinus balloon catheters are provided for treating a patient's paranasal sinus system, including dilating prepared openings, and natural ostia and ducts and excising sinus cavities. These include a balloon catheter with a bend placing a distal segment at 90.degree. to a proximal segment and a balloon catheter which is substantially straight. The catheters have sufficient stiffness and column strength that the balloon carrying distal segment of the catheter can be pushed into the prepared opening, natural ostium or duct, or sinus to be excised. The catheters have appropriate inflated working diameters and appropriate outer diameters with the balloon deflated that will enable the catheter to be pushed into the respective prepared opening, natural ostium or duct, or sinus cavity to be excised. The methods use the balloon catheters to dilate prepared openings to selected parts of the sinus system, to dilate natural ostia and ducts of the sinus system, and/or to dilate sinus cavities to remove them.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 2, 2006Publication date: November 13, 2008Inventor: Bruce Becker

Publication number: 20070289478Abstract: An air flow conduit (98) and a related plenum (80) for distributing conditioned air from a refrigeration and heating unit (64) on an end (44) of a railroad freight car (20) into a cargo space (53) within the car (20). A deflector directs a flow of air upward into an inlet end of the plenum (80) and allows the flow to expand gradually within the plenum, smoothing the flow of air within the plenum so that it continues effectively at sufficient rates over the length of the car (20).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2004Publication date: December 20, 2007Inventors: Bruce Becker, Deborah Pence

Publication number: 20070123924Abstract: A balloon catheter for treatment of a patient's lacrimal system is applied transnasally without the use of a guide wire or a curve retention member. The catheter is formed of a stainless steel hypotube and is of sufficient stiffness and column strength to enable the deflated catheter to be pushed from the patient's nasal cavity through a prepared small-tight opening, which is formed through the lateral nasal wall and lacrimal fossa, into the lacrimal sac. The catheter has a proximal shaft and a distal segment positioned by a bend at an angle of 70° to 115°, preferably 90°, to the proximal shaft. An inflatable member is mounted about the distal segment and is adhesively bonded to the distal end of the proximal shaft, the bend, and the proximal end of the distal segment and to the distal portion of the distal segment.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2007Publication date: May 31, 2007Inventor: Bruce Becker

Publication number: 20070073269Abstract: A suctioning and irrigating sinus balloon catheter is provided for treating a patient's paranasal sinus system, including dilating prepared openings, and natural ostia and ducts and excising sinus cavities and choana. The catheter has a number of fluid carrying conduits to provide irrigation, suction and inflation/deflation to the distally mounted balloon. The catheters have sufficient stiffness and column strength that the balloon carrying distal segment of the catheter can be pushed into the prepared opening, natural ostium or duct, choana or sinus to be excised. Some catheters can be hand bendable by the surgeon. Some catheters provide the capability of threading an endoscope through one of the conduits. The methods use the balloon catheters to dilate prepared openings to selected parts of the sinus system, to dilate natural ostia and ducts of the sinus system, choana, and/or to dilate sinus cavities to remove them.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 4, 2005Publication date: March 29, 2007Inventor: Bruce Becker

Patent number: 7169163Abstract: A balloon catheter for treatment of a patient's lacrimal system is applied transnasally without the use of a guide wire or a curve retention member. The catheter uses a stainless steel hypotube of sufficient stiffness and column strength to be pushed from the patent's nasal cavity through an opening-formed through the lateral nasal wall and lacrimal fossa, into the lacrimal sac. The catheter has an inflatable member mounted about a rigid bent distal segment. The opening is first formed by pushing small holes through the medial sac, lacrimal fossa, and lateral nasal wall with an instrument and coalescing the holes. The catheter is then introduced into the nasal cavity and pushed laterally through the opening by manipulating its proximal end. Pressurized fluid is then applied to the catheter to inflate the inflatable member and dilate the opening.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Inventor: Bruce Becker

Publication number: 20060276738Abstract: A lacrimal bypass drainage device uses a cannula or tube having a flange on the ocular end and a threaded outer surface to provide for greater axial friction. The flange is keyed to allow engagement by a screwdriver type tool having a correspondingly keyed trocar mounted to a manipulable handle. The trocar has a forward shaft portion for coaxially engaging the cylindrical lumen of the tube. The shaft portion has a front end formed into a blade and an opposite rear end formed into a radially widened haft. The haft carries two axially forward projecting prongs to engage correspondingly placed notches in the flange of the tube. The handle portion of the tool extends rearwardly from the haft. The blade can be formed into two frustoconical symmetric arcuate sections to enhance cutting during twisting manipulation of the tool. The trocar portion can be made to be replaceable for differently sized, shaped or bladed trocar portions.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2005Publication date: December 7, 2006Inventor: Bruce Becker
