  • Publication number: 20070100094
Abstract: A system for processing large quantities of a reaction medium while maintaining the reaction medium in sheets. The system includes a reactor having a plurality of vertically-spaced downwardly-sloped trays over which the reaction medium flows while it is subjected to reaction conditions. The slope of the trays increases downwardly to accommodate for the increased viscosity of the reaction medium while the reaction medium flows downwardly through the reactor. An upper portion of the trays have a uni-directional configuration, while a lower portion of the trays have a bi-directional configuration. Further, the orientation of flow across the uni-directional trays is rotated by 90 degrees in at least one location as the reaction medium flows down the uni-directional trays.

  • Publication number: 20070066792
Abstract: A process for preparing modified polymer by withdrawing a slip stream of polymer melt from the discharge line of a continuous polymerization reactor, admixing in a highly modified polymeric additive into the polymer melt within the slip stream, then introducing the modifier containing slip stream late in the manufacturing process prior to the slip stream withdrawal point. The improved processes of the invention have particular utility for large-scale, continuous reactor where transitions and short production runs are economically prohibitive thereby limiting the product breath. The process is particularly suited for producing a family of copolyesters using a continuous melt phase production process.

  • Publication number: 20070066791
Abstract: A polyester polymer composition containing polyester polymers such as polymers having repeating ethylene terephthalate units, aluminum atoms in an amount of at least 3 ppm based on the weight of the polymer, the polyester polymers having an It.V. of at least 0.72 dL/g obtained through a melt phase polymerization and a residual acetaldehyde level of 10 ppm or less. Also provided are polyester polymer compositions containing polyester polymers and: (i) aluminum atoms (ii) alkaline earth metal atoms or alkali metal atoms or alkali compound residues, and (iii) a catalyst deactivator such as a phosphorus compound. The phosphorus compound is added to the polyester melt either late in the polycondensation or upon remelting a solid polyester polymer. The polyester polymer exhibits good L* brightness, clarity, and low levels of acetaldehyde generated upon melting.

  • Publication number: 20060268658
Abstract: A method of mixing fluids includes providing a flow stream of a first fluid, providing a flow stream of second fluid, and providing a gear pump having an inlet and an outlet. The flow stream of the first fluid and the second fluid is fed through the inlet of the gear pump. The gear pump is operated to mix the flow stream of the first fluid and the second fluid to obtain a mixed fluid flow stream out of the outlet of the gear pump.

  • Publication number: 20060046217
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for treating the wastes of polyester-manufacturing processes. The method of the invention comprises combining the fuel with a first waste byproduct stream to form a combined fuel and first waste byproduct stream mixture that is combusted in a furnace. The present invention also provides certain useful variations of this method in which one or more of the following steps are performed: a second waste byproduct stream is introduced and treated in a regenerative thermal oxidizer, a third waste byproduct stream is introduced and treated in a waste water treatment plant, or a fourth waste byproduct stream is introduced and treated in a fluid bed incinerator. The present invention also provides an apparatus that executes the methods of the invention.

  • Publication number: 20060047103
Abstract: In one embodiment, there is provided a process comprising introducing polyester polymer particles containing residual acetaldehyde into a vessel at a temperature within a range of 130° C. to 195° C. to form a bed of particles within the vessel, flowing a gas through at least a portion of the particle bed, and withdrawing finished particles from the vessel having a reduced amount of residual acetaldehyde. In this process, it is not necessary to introduce a hot flow of gas at high flow rates otherwise required to heat up cool particles to a temperature sufficient to strip acetaldehyde. Rather, this process provides a benefit in that, if desired, gas introduced into the vessel at low flow rates and low temperatures can nevertheless effectively strip acetaldehyde in a reasonable time because the hot particles quickly heat a the gas to the particle temperature.
