Patent number: 8828577Abstract: An energy storage system comprising at least one energy storage module adapted to supply electrical energy to a hybrid vehicle. The energy storage module comprises an enclosure having at least one battery array located within the enclosure. The energy storage module includes a thermal pad disposed between the battery array and an interior surface of the primary enclosure. A heat sink is disposed on an exterior surface of the primary enclosure. The heat sink comprises a plurality of fins which may be disposed angularly with respect to a longitudinal axis of the primary enclosure. The height or length of the fins may be varied relative to a fan location to provide uniform cooling across the battery cells in the battery array. An enclosing plate is mounted exterior to the heat sink and defining an airflow cavity, wherein the enclosing plate directs air from the fan across the heat sink.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2012Date of Patent: September 9, 2014Assignee: Allison Transmission, Inc.Inventors: Daniel J. Patent number: 8512887Abstract: An energy storage system comprising at least one energy storage module implemented as a sealed or submersible unit and adapted to supply electrical energy to a hybrid vehicle. The energy storage module comprises an enclosure and at least one battery array located within the enclosure. The energy storage module includes a pressure relief panel held in place by springs that allows battery gases to escape if gas pressures reach a predetermined threshold. Pressure in the enclosure compresses the springs causing the pressure relief panel to temporarily move outward until pressure is relieved at which time the springs force the pressure relief panel to reseal the enclosure.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2012Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Allison Transmission, Inc.Inventors: Steven T. Reyburn, Dean M. Ford, Bruce E. Miller

Patent number: 6674058Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for focusing a laser scanning cytometer. In the illustrative embodiment, during one cytometric measurement process, a single laser is used for focusing the cytometer and for taking cytometric measurements. Laser light is transmitted though an objective lens and directed at a substrate in order to cause markers in a sample on the substrate 122 to fluoresce. A byproduct the of cytometric measurement is that a portion of the laser light incident on the substrate 122 with or without a sample is backscattered. The objective of the illustrative system collects the backscattered light along with the fluorescing light. Optical elements separate this backscattered laser light from the fluorescing light. The illustrative system uses the backscattered light to focus the objective.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2000Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: Compucyte CorporationInventor: Bruce E. Miller
