  • Patent number: 5264904
Abstract: An apparatus which cleans a moving imaging surface with a cleaning blade and automatically detects a failure of the cleaning blade. A failure sensing mechanism detects the cleaning blade failure and activates a blade indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in a wiping or doctoring mode frictional contact with the imaging surface for cleaning. A brush positioned upstream of the cleaning blade, in the direction of movement of the imaging surface, disturbs the particles thereon.

  • Patent number: 5257079
Abstract: A cleaning brush electrically biased with an alternating current removes discharged particles from an imaging surface. The particles on the imaging surface are discharged by a corona generating device. A second cleaning device including an insulative brush, a conductive brush or a blade, located upstream of the first mentioned brush, in the direction of movement of the imaging surface, further removes redeposited particles therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5243385
Abstract: Apparatus for increasing the cleaning efficiency of rigid blade cleaners used to clean compliant belt-type photoreceptors in low to high volume, black and white and color electrophotographic copiers and printers. A center portion of a backing photoreceptor support roll is proportionately bowed outward toward the cleaning blade to compensate for nonuniform belt tension under the blade cleaner due to the deflection of the backing support roll. In particular, the appropriate amount of bow in the center portion of a backing photoreceptor support roll or, alternatively, channel backer, results in a uniform cleaning blade load and, therefore, enhanced cleaning across a compliant belt photoreceptor having non-uniform belt tension, that is inexpensive and easy to manufacture and implement.

  • Patent number: 5214479
Abstract: Apparatus for cleaning residual toner and paper fiber residue from a biased transfer roll (BTR) in an electrophotographic apparatus using high velocity air and substantially contactless flexible biased conductive shims. The high velocity air flow between the BTR and two thin conductive flex-shims is created by means of a blower that evacuates the air in the cleaner housing vacuum chamber. The high velocity air, in combination with the electrically biased BTR and flex-shims, removes residue from the BTR surface and carries it into the vacuum chamber and deposits the residue in a filter bag. The BTR biased shim cleaner system is low cost, efficient and significantly smaller than current BTR cleaning devices.

  • Patent number: 5208639
Abstract: An apparatus for cleaning residual toner and debris from a moving charge retentive surface of an image forming apparatus includes a multiple turret style blade holder located such that an individual blade is selectively indexed into optimum position for cleaning the moving photoreceptor. The blade holder contains a number of cleaning blades mounted radially from a central core and by rotating the holder about its longitudinal axis a specified number of degrees (360.degree./number of cleaning blades on the holder) a new cleaning blade is moved by the indexing device into the cleaning position to replace a failed blade. The indexing device removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in frictional contact with the photoreceptor for cleaning.

  • Patent number: 5202735
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling air inlet flow through a cleaner housing arranged downstream of a toner transfer area and adjacent an image forming surface of a photoreceptor in an electrophotographic machine. An adjustable air inlet baffle, with attached film seal, is mounted on the cleaner housing such that an air inlet gap is formed. The size of the gap and direction of air flow can be varied by the structure of the baffle. Additionally, the attached film seal extends laterally across, contacts and rests upon the image forming surface of the photoreceptor, thus allowing the photoreceptor to pass under the film seal unobstructed while the film seal acts in sealing engagement with the photoreceptor to prevent emissions of residual toner from the housing.

  • Patent number: 5200788
Abstract: A brush auger reclaim filtration assembly incorporated into an open ended chamber. The brush auger is a toner reclaim filtration device that is rotatably mounted, in the chamber, to move toner and debris along a separating screen. Also contained in the housing is a mounted transport auger that rotates as it moves the reclaimed toner to the developer housing.

  • Patent number: 4819026
Abstract: Toner removal device for removing residual toner and debris from a charge retentive surface after transfer of toner images from the surface. This device is characterized by the use of a pair of electrically biased detoning rolls, one for removing toner from a biased cleaner brush for recirculation and use and the other for removing debris such as paper fibers and Kaolin from the brush. Placement of the detoning rolls is selected so that the brushes are located adjacent natural oscillation nodes of the brush, and closely spaced to the position where the cleaning brush leaves contact with the charge retentive surface. Cleaning blades for the detoning rolls are integrally provided with holders for insertion into receiving slots in the cleaning housing. Extrusion sleeves are provided for insertion into toner transport devices for removal for cleaning.
