    Abstract: An ethanol sensing unit and a method of using, wherein the unit is particularly suitable for use in a confined environment such as the passenger compartment of a passenger vehicle. The sensing unit comprises a device for collecting ethanol vapors while the device is at a first temperature, a device for heating the collecting device to a second temperature higher than the first temperature so as to release ethanol vapors from the collecting device, and a device for sensing the ethanol vapors released from the collecting device when heated by the heating device. The sensing unit is also adapted to delay the operation of the heating device until a period of time sufficient for the collecting device to adsorb ethanol vapors from air contained in the confined environment.

    Abstract: A fast light-off catalytic reformer and method includes at least one preferably substantially cylindrical reactor tube having an inlet for receiving a flow of fuel and a flow of air, a reforming catalyst disposed within the reactor tube for converting the fuel and air to a reformate stream, and an outlet for discharging the produced reformate stream. An ignition device disposed within the reactor tube initiates an exothermic reaction between the fuel and air. Heat generated thereby provides fast light-off of the reforming catalyst. An associated control system selects fuel and air flow delivery rates and operates the ignition device to achieve fast light-off of the reforming catalyst at start-up and to maintain the catalyst at a temperature sufficient to optimize reformate yield. The rapid production of high yields of reformate is particularly suitable for use in an on-board reforming strategy for meeting SULEV emissions with spark-ignition engines, especially with larger, higher emitting vehicles.

    Abstract: This invention is an on-board means to verify that a vehicle's exhaust emissions control system functions normally. It monitors hydrocarbon (HC) exhaust emissions for a few minutes after a cold start or at other selected times. If used from cold start, it is an on-board approximation to taking the first bag sample in an FTP test. The measurement involves storing a portion of the exhaust HC. Various embodiments are discussed. Some involve measuring the cumulative amount of stored HC (as on a substrate) during the test. Other embodiments wait until the end of the test to measure the amount of stored HC. At the end of each test (or trip), the storage means is returned to an empty state to await the next test. If HC is stored on or in a substrate, for example, the temperature of the substrate is raised. This decreases the amount of stored HC vapor and renews the substrate for the next test.
