  • Patent number: 11131027
Abstract: A pretreatment composition for metal that provides enhanced corrosion resistance, enhanced paint adhesion and reduced chip damage to a wide variety of metal substrates. The pretreatment is also cleaner because it is based on zirconium rather than zinc phosphates. The pretreatment coating composition in use preferably comprises 50 to 300 parts per million (ppm) zirconium, 0 to 100 ppm of SiO2, 150-2000 ppm of total fluorine and 10-100 ppm of free fluorine, 150 to 10000 ppm of zinc and 10 to 10000 ppm of an oxidizing agent and has a pH of 3.0 to 5.0, preferably about 4.0. The coating composition can optionally include 0 to 50 ppm of copper. The suitable oxidizing agents can be selected from a large group.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 24, 2018
Date of Patent: September 28, 2021
Assignee: Henkel AG & Co. KGaA
Inventors: Donald Vonk, Edis Kapic, Bruce Goodreau, Alvaro Bobadilla

  • Patent number: 9234283
Abstract: The corrosion resistance of a metal substrate surface treated with an acidic aqueous composition to form a conversion coating is improved by first contacting the surface with an oxidizing acidic pre-rinse, such as an aqueous solution of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide, or nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, or Fe+3 cations and hydrofluoric acid.

  • Publication number: 20070262120
Abstract: An aqueous lubricating composition comprising at least one divalent metal nitrate; at least one alkali metal hydroxide; at least one ionic surfactant; and at least one lubricant/release agent. Upon application to aluminum and titanium, the lubricating composition forms a dry film lubricant stable to heating to a temperature of 200 to 400° C., preferably 1100° C.

  • Publication number: 20050145303
Abstract: A process for the chemical pretreatment, before an organic coating, of composite metal structures that contain aluminum or aluminum alloy portions together with zinc or zinc alloy portions, and steel, galvanized steel and/or alloy-galvanized steel portions, such that the phosphate level and the operating temperature of the zinc phosphate solution is reduced, and the nitrite accelerator level of the solution is increased. The process of the present invention reduces the sludge produced by the process, the temperature at which the process operates, and the need for monitoring the process. Furthermore, the pretreatment process of the present invention forms a conversion layer on all exposed metal surfaces that is suitable as a corrosion-preventing paint substrate, especially before a cathodic electro-dipcoating.
