  • Patent number: 11226438
Abstract: A support for optical elements is described. The support includes a base substrate with high specific stiffness and a finishing layer. The base substrate is a non-oxide ceramic material, preferably a carbide, such as boron carbide or silicon carbide. The finishing layer is preferably Ge or an alloy of Al and Si. The finishing layer is or is capable of being processed to provide a surface with low finish. Low finish is achieved by diamond turning or polishing the finishing material. The finishing layer has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the base substrate. The optical element optionally includes a reflective stack on the finishing layer.

  • Publication number: 20160327721
Abstract: A lighting device is provided that includes a plurality of laser diodes each producing light in respective beams and a plurality of collimating lenses optically aligned with respective beams of the plurality of laser diodes. The lighting device also includes a field lens optically aligned to receive the laser light emitted by each of the plurality of laser diodes and directed thereto by the plurality of collimating lenses. The lighting device further has a light diffusing fiber having a terminal end located near a focal point of the field lens to receive the laser light, wherein the light diffusing fiber emits light from a side wall.

  • Patent number: 5435729
Abstract: An apparatus and method for simulating a desired response in accordance with an external applied force. The apparatus includes a member which is responsive to the applied force, an actuator coupled to the member for exerting a torque on the member, a force sensor for detecting the applied force, and a torque sensor for detecting the torque exerted by the actuator. Signals from the force sensor are used to determine the system response based upon a desired relation. The force sensor signals also are used to determine the actual system response based upon the physical characteristics of the apparatus. The detected torque is compared with the desired and the actual system response, and as a result of the comparison the torque exerted by the actuator onto the member is adjusted accordingly so that the member performs the desired system response. The actuator is preferably an electric motor so that the apparatus can simulate any desired response, notwithstanding the physical characteristics of the system.
