Abstract: The invention is a portable device for transmitting acoustical energy from an ultrasonic generator, through the exterior surface of the skin of a patient, for the purpose of increasing the release of biofunctional compounds from a targeted organ for treatment of disease or injury. In particular the invention is a means to cause the release of insulin from the patient's pancreas, to enhance the treatment of diabetes. The portable device is programmable as to acoustic frequency, intensity, and time thereby regulating the amount of insulin, which can be induced to be released in response to the sonic transmission from the patient's pancreas. The device can be programmed for steady sonic transmission or for pulsed transmissions as needed. The device is primarily aimed at Type-2 diabetics, who produce insulin internally but not necessarily in amounts or at times needed for effective biofunctionality.

The system includes at least one aperture for receiving at least one ultrasonic transmission. The at least one substance is releasably secured substantially adjacent to the at least one aperture. A sonic member is disposed with respect to the at least one aperture so as to communicate the at least one transmission to the at least one substance so as to effect the delivery of the at least one substance through the surface of the subject.

Abstract: Dietary fibers have their properties modified by applying a shock wave to a dispersion of the fibers in a fluid carrier. Pressure from a piston, in either a single or a series of compressive strokes or pulses exerted on the dispersion applies the shock wave. Increasing the effect of cavitation caused by the shock wave can enhance the modified properties of the fibers. The resulting pressure treated dietary fiber exhibits reduced calories, higher insoluble fiber content, reduced moisture absorption properties, and greater uniformity from batch to batch.

Abstract: A method for enhancing delivery of at least one substance through a surface of and into a subject. The method includes situating the substance adjacent to the surface of the subject. The method includes placing at least one ultrasonic signal emitting device adjacent to the substance such and to the subject. And, applying at least one alternating ultrasonic signal to the substance using the ultrasonic signal emitting device so as to effect movement of at least a portion of the substance through the surface and into the subject.
