Patent number: 11851092Abstract: The technology involves determining a minimum lateral gap distance between a vehicle configured for autonomous driving and one or more other objects in the vehicle's environment. The minimum lateral gap is used when determining whether to have a driver take over control of certain driving operations. This provides a measure of safety during disengagements or other change of control events. Determining the minimum lateral gap includes calculating a budgeted distance based on a cross-track error for a lateral position of the vehicle, an allowed actual gap distance to an object in the vehicle's environment, and a perception error associated with a location of the object in the vehicle's environment. This determination can be done for a set of possible operating speeds and steering rate limit combinations. The vehicle's control system may notify the driver to take control, for instance with audible, visual and/or haptic notifications.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2022Date of Patent: December 26, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Jennifer Iglesias, Diomidis Katzourakis, Kerrie Wu, Bruce Lin

Publication number: 20230242158Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for controlling an autonomous vehicle. For instance, data identifying an object may be received. A first portion of a trajectory may be generated using a first uncertainty distribution for the object. The first portion of the trajectory may enable the autonomous vehicle to make progress towards a destination of the autonomous vehicle. A fallback portion of the trajectory may be generated using a second uncertainty distribution for the object. The fallback portion may enable the autonomous vehicle to stop. The second uncertainty distribution may be different from the first uncertainty distribution, and the second uncertainty distribution may be based on a predetermined uncertainty distribution if the autonomous vehicle loses a localization improvement process. The autonomous vehicle may be controlled according to the trajectory.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 2, 2022Publication date: August 3, 2023Inventors: Diomidis Katzourakis, Bruce Lin, Victor Puchkarev, Carson Schultz, Karankumar Dhankani

Patent number: 9398314Abstract: Architecture for enhancing the compression (e.g., luma, chroma) of a video signal and improving the perceptual quality of the video compression schemes. The architecture operates to reshape the normal multimodal energy distribution of the input video signal to a new energy distribution. In the context of luma, the algorithm maps the black and white (or contrast) information of a picture to a new energy distribution. For example, the contrast can be enhanced in the middle range of the luma spectrum, thereby improving the contrast between a light foreground object and a dark background. At the same time, the algorithm reduces the bit-rate requirements at a particular quantization step size. The algorithm can be utilized also in post-processing to improve the quality of decoded video.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2008Date of Patent: July 19, 2016Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Walid Ali, Shankar Regunathan, Guo-Wei Shieh, Bruce Lin, Bharath Siravara, Ce Wang

Publication number: 20110070511Abstract: Improvements in startup time for an electrochemical fuel cell system from freezing and sub-freezing temperatures may be observed by minimizing the coolant volume in the coolant subsystem. In particular, this may be accomplished by having a two pump—dual loop cooling subsystem. During startup, one pump directs coolant through a startup coolant loop and after either the fuel cell stack or the coolant temperature reaches a predetermined threshold value, coolant from a main or standard coolant loop is then directed to the fuel cell stack. In an embodiment, coolant from the standard loop mixes with coolant in the startup loop after the predetermined threshold temperature is reached.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2010Publication date: March 24, 2011Applicants: DAIMLER AG, FORD MOTOR COMPANYInventors: Amy E. Patent number: 7733962Abstract: Systems and methods for processing input media in a computing device are described. In one aspect, a reconstructed frame is cached according to a set of criteria. A request to scrub to a predictive frame of input media is received. Responsive to receiving the request, the predictive frame is decoded starting with the reconstructed frame.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2003Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Rebecca C. Patent number: 7716551Abstract: Feedback and frame synchronization between media encoders and decoders is described. More particularly, the encoder can encode frames that are based on source content to be sent to the decoder. The encoder can determine whether the frame should be cached by the encoder and the decoder. If the frame is to be cached, the encoder can so indicate by encoding the frame with one or more cache control bits. The decoder can receive the frame from the decoder, and can examine the cache control bits to determine whether to cache the frame. The decoder can also decode the frame.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2005Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Warren V Barkley, Regis J.
