  • Patent number: 7010633
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for controlling access to facilities based on usage class of a requestor are provided. With the apparatus, system and method, a two level protection mechanism is provided for protecting host channel adapter (HCA) facilities from unauthorized access. With the present invention, a first level of access is provided through virtual address translation and a mechanism for determining if the requestor of access may access a system memory address space page associated with a real address to which the virtual address maps. A second level of access is provided through the allocation of usage classes and determining a required usage class for accessing an HCA facility.

  • Publication number: 20040215848
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus, system and method for providing a generalized queue pair for use with host channel adapters of a system area network. With the apparatus, system and method, the hypervisor of a host channel adapter maintains a P_Key table for each logical port of the host channel adapter. When a request is received to allocate a queue pair from a requestor application associated with a logical port, a P_Key mode is set in a control register associated with the queue pair based on the type of requestor application that sent the request. Based on this P_Key mode, one or more P_Keys from a P_Key table associated with the logical port from which the request was received are written to one or more P_Key registers allocated to the queue pair. These P_Keys are then used to perform P_Key checks of incoming data packets. In addition, these P_Keys are inserted into headers of outgoing data packets.

  • Publication number: 20040202189
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for providing multiple logical partitions in a system area network are provided Logical partitioning support is provided for host channel adapters which allows multiple operating systems to share the resources of a single physical host channel adapter (HCA). The apparatus, system and method ensures that each operating system is unaware that the HCA hardware resources are being shared with other operating systems and further guarantees that the individual operating systems are prevented from accessing HCA hardware resources which are associated with other operating systems.

  • Publication number: 20030224072
Abstract: This present invention describes a method of diagnosing and treating neuropathic pain, Bell's palsy, viral sore throat, pain due to burns, including sunburn, and pain and itching due to insect bites with compositions of essential aromatic oils, all of which contain Pelargonium graveolens (also called geranium oil bourbon or GOB). This invention discloses compositions of one or more of five other essential aromatic oils, particularly lavender, bergamot, blue chamomile, eucalyptus and tea tree, which when added to GOB acts synergistically with the GOB. These compositions can be used alone or in a composition with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier in topical or oral dosage form. The present invention is an improvement in the methods and expansion of uses as stated in the previous United States Patent issued in 1993 entitled “Diagnosis and Treatment of Various Neuralgias” (Frome)—U.S. Pat. No. 5,260,313.

  • Patent number: 6601148
Abstract: A method, system and program for controlling access to memory areas within a computer are provided. The invention comprises placing a first Bind Work Queue Element (WQE) at the head of a work queue, wherein the first Bind WQE defines parameters associated with a first Memory Window. A set of Work Requests is then placed on the work queue, behind the first Bind WQE wherein the work requests invoke operations that access the first Memory Window. A second Bind WQE is then placed on the work queue, behind the first set of Work Requests. This second Bind WQE defines parameters associated with a second Memory Window. A second set of Work Requests is placed on the work queue behind the second Bind WQE and invoke operations that access the second memory window. The Memory Windows can be associated with a common Memory Region and have different addresses and lengths or different access rights. In another embodiment, the first and second Memory Windows can be associated with different Memory Regions.

  • Publication number: 20020073257
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for processing foreign protocol requests, such as PCI transactions, across a system area network (SAN) utilizing a data packet protocol is provided while maintaining the other SAN traffic. In one embodiment, a HCA receives a request for a load or store operation from a processor to an I/O adapter using a protocol which is foreign to the system area network, such as a PCI bus protocol. The HCA encapsulates the request into a data packet and places appropriate headers and trailers in the data packet to ensure that the data packet is delivered across the SAN fabric to an appropriate TCA to which the requested I/O adapter is connected. The TCA receives the data packet, determines that it contains a foreign protocol request, and decodes the data packet to obtain the foreign protocol request. The foreign protocol request is then transmitted to the appropriate I/O adapter.

  • Patent number: 6324620
Abstract: Method and apparatus for managing data on DASD units to improve system performance comprises monitoring portions of data on a plurality of DASD units to determine the times the data is accessed within a given time period, and characterizing accessed data portions of a DASD unit as HOT and COLD data. The DASD units are monitored to determine the number of times each unit is accessed within a time period to develop utilization factors reflective of the number of times the DASD unit is accessed during the time period. HOT and COLD data is moved between DASD units based on the utilization factors of the DASD units.

  • Patent number: 6317747
Abstract: System control of compression and decompression of data based upon system aging parameters, such that compressed data becomes a system managed resource with a distinct place in the system storage hierarchy. Processor registers are backed by cache, which is backed by main storage, which is backed by decompressed disk storage, which is backed by compressed disk storage then tape, and so forth. Data is moved from decompressed to compressed form and migrated through the storage hierarchy under system control according to a data life cycle based on system aging parameters or, optionally, on demand: data is initially created and stored; the data is compressed at a later time under system control; when the data is accessed, it is decompressed on demand by segment; at some later time, the data is again compressed under system control until next reference. Large data objects are segmented and compression is applied to more infrequently used data.

  • Patent number: 6223345
Abstract: The application package building system includes an application storage maintaining specification and component information, and a client package build system which creates an application package definition for both a client application package and a server application package. The package definition identifies required specification and component information for both the client application package and the server application package. A client package build engine builds the client application package using the required specification and component information, and a server package build engine builds the server application package from the required specification and component information.

  • Patent number: 5765204
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for adaptive localization of frequently accessed, randomly addressed data in a direct access storage device (DASD) to achieve improved system access performance. At selected sampling intervals, a DASD storage controller analyzes data access patterns based on frequency of access, identifies a remapping algorithm to remap the logical groups to physical groups, and moves the physical groups according to the identified remapping algorithm. The data reordering on the DASD provides frequently accessed data in close proximity so that seek time is minimized. The adaptive data localization method periodically performed by the storage controller is transparent to the host file system. The reordering of the data on the DASD is performed during periods of low system data transfer activity.

  • Patent number: 5684986
Abstract: An embedded directory record and method are provided for maintaining directory information for compressed data on a direct access storage device (DASD). The embedded directory record includes a plurality of page entries, a plurality of exception region entries and a plurality of compression group statistics. Each page entry includes an allocated page length value and a number of used sectors value in the allocated page. The exception region entries include a page index and a bit map used for identifying exception sectors used. The compression group statistics include a total count of allocated sectors, a total count of the used sectors; and a total count of written pages. A starting page address for a requested page is identified beginning at a start of the page entries by summing the allocated page length values for each page up to the requested page to identify an offset value and combining the offset value with a predetermined logical block address.
