  • Patent number: 11306896
Abstract: An integrated light engine including flexible optics and a flexible light source, and lighting devices including the same, are provided. The integrated light engine includes a flexible light source configured to emit light, and flexible optics coupled to the flexible light source. The flexible optics beam shapes light emitted by the flexible light source. The integrated light engine is capable of entering a set of states, such that a portion of beam shaped light emitted by the integrated light engine in a first state is aimed in a first direction and a portion of beam shaped light emitted by the integrated light engine in a second state is aimed in a second direction. Different combinations of the flexible optics with the flexible light source result in the integrated light engine being able to enter a number of flexed states or being held in a substantially flat, substantially stiff state.

  • Publication number: 20200232623
Abstract: Cellular lighting elements and lighting devices including the same are disclosed. A cellular lighting element includes a substrate including a solid state light source, and a light control film. The light control film is made of a single layer of light shaping material. The light control film is formed so as to create a cellular shape, which surrounds, at least in part, the solid state light source. The formed light control film and the substrate form a chamber, which defines an area. The solid state light source is located in the area within the chamber. Plurality of such cellular lighting elements may be joined together form lighting devices.

  • Patent number: 10677420
Abstract: Optical components for lighting devices and lighting devices including such components are described. In some embodiments the optical components are in the form of a lens that alter the distribution of light produced by a lighting fixture. In some embodiments, the lenses are in the form of a downlight to wallwash lens which, when placed in a downlight fixture, convert the light distribution to that of a wallwash fixture, e.g., causing the downlight to produce an off-axis light distribution, without changing the fixture. The lens includes a body with a light source facing side and an opposite room facing side having two optically active regions, each including structures that redirect a portion of light received through the light source facing side and incident thereon. The first region includes structures that redirect, via refraction, and the second region includes structures that redirect, in part via total internal reflection.

  • Patent number: 10260711
Abstract: Light control films, and lighting devices including the same, are disclosed. The light control films include a single layer of light transmitting material having a first side and a second side. A plurality of first microstructures are formed in the first side. The first microstructures are configured to receive incident light from a light source and produce an off axis (e.g. batwing) light distribution in a field downstream of the second side of the light control film. In some embodiments, a plurality of second microstructures is formed on the second side of the light control films and are configured to reduce the glare produced by light emitted from the light source passing through the film.

  • Publication number: 20180119902
Abstract: Lighting devices, and methods of manufacturing the same, are provided. A lighting device includes a cover through which emitted light passes and a formed flexible light engine. The formed flexible light engine is placed within a housing, or serves as the housing itself. An interface couples to cover to the housing or the formed flexible light engine. The formed flexible light engine includes a flexible substrate and a plurality of solid state light sources located thereon. The plurality of solid state light sources are configured to emit light through the cover. The formed light engine has a defined shape created during the forming process. This enables placement on the housing within the lighting device, or contributes to the overall shape of the lighting device.

  • Patent number: 9894759
Abstract: A substrate for a solid state lighting module has a plurality of serrated finger sections extending from an interconnecting base. The substrate may be formed from a single rectangular sheet by cutting away material between adjacent finger sections of a symmetrical second substrate to form the finger sections of the substrate. Parallel linear rows of solid state light sources may be disposed along the length of each finger section. For example, the solid state light sources may be disposed proximate to points of sawteeth at the edges of the finger sections.

  • Publication number: 20170307150
Abstract: A formed lighting device having a shape that extends in three dimensions is provided. The formed lighting device includes a formed flexible substrate having a shape, and a stretchable conductive trace located on the formable flexible substrate. A plurality of solid state light sources are attached to the stretchable conductive trace. The shape of the substrate, and thus the lighting device, extends in three dimensions and includes a three-dimensional structure that beam shapes light emitted from one of the solid state light sources. The three-dimensional structure may be a plurality of peaks and a corresponding plurality of valleys. A set of solid state light sources in the plurality of solid state light sources may be located in the plurality of valleys.

  • Patent number: 9732937
Abstract: An illumination optical system with a tunable beam angle (IOSTBA) is presented to achieve different beam angles without changing parts. The IOSTBA includes a light source and a post having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end in optical communication with the light source, an internal area of the post having a reflective surface. Also shown is a diffuser disposed across the end of the post, the diffuser in optical communication with the post and a reflector surrounding a portion of the post, the reflector movable along a length of the post. A position of the reflector along the post determines a beam angle of a resulting light beam exiting the IOSTBA. The system features a simple and cost effective optical design which works with a variety of light sources, including color mixing and champing strategies.

  • Patent number: 9528683
Abstract: A luminaire is provided, that includes a housing and a plurality of solid state light sources connected thereto. The housing has a top side, two lateral sides, a protrusion in the top side, and two light source mounting surfaces. The top side is diffusely reflecting and has opposing lateral edges and a center. The lateral sides are specularly reflecting and extend generally downward from the opposing lateral edges of the top side. Each has a respective bottom edge. The light source mounting surfaces extend laterally inward from the respective bottom edges. The plurality of solid state light sources is disposed along the pair of light source mounting surfaces proximate the pair of specularly reflecting lateral sides. These emit light, which travels upward to the top side and is also specularly reflected by the lateral sides toward the top side. The top side diffusely reflects the light out of the luminaire.
